Toyota’s 2024 Land Cruiser is especially easy to misidentify when browsing imported vehicles. The J250 series returned to the US after a hiatus, while the same core vehicle family was introduced in Japan with a different local powertrain menu. The 250 is not interchangeable with the larger Land Cruiser 300, and the Land Cruiser Prado name may appear elsewhere. Start a purchase search by identifying the precise market specification and model code before comparing any equipment or mechanical figures.
Powertrains, equipment and market specifications
The US Land Cruiser uses Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX 2.4-litre turbocharged hybrid, rated at 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive. Toyota stated an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined for this US version. Japan’s official introduction identifies gasoline and diesel choices instead; neither those engines nor their local grade names belong in a US specification table. These are factual differences in homologation, not contradictions to smooth over with a generic global engine list.
Checking a used example
A 2026 buyer should inspect a used J250’s underside, recovery points and tyres for evidence of difficult trail use. Validate the correct four-wheel-drive controls, service documents and factory equipment against the destination market. Ask about towing only after checking the market-specific manual and vehicle registration. Some Australian examples sold during calendar 2024 are catalogued locally as 2025 model year; their 2.8-litre diesel with 48-volt assistance must not be represented as a 2024 US hybrid.
Who should buy it, and alternatives
Choose the Land Cruiser if genuine body-on-frame off-road capability and a smaller footprint than some luxury 4x4s matter more than a car-like ride. Buyers focused on school runs or fuel costs should also drive a hybrid family SUV. Consider a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco where available, but compare their actual seating, cargo arrangement and trim-specific off-road kit. The Land Cruiser 250’s famous name is not evidence of a specific used vehicle’s condition or a measurable future reliability outcome.
