Context and model-year identity

The fourth-generation Vellfire went on sale in Japan alongside the Alphard in June 2023 and was still a current Japan-sale vehicle throughout 2024. Its more assertive appearance is not just a trim treatment on an identically specified Alphard; Toyota positioned it with its own Z Premier equipment and a distinctive available 2.4-litre turbo gasoline powertrain. Buyers comparing two used MPVs should therefore examine engine, suspension and cabin equipment before relying on external similarity. A 2024 build is not the PHEV that Toyota announced at the end of 2024 for sales starting in early 2025.

2024 powertrain and market specifications

In the original Japanese fourth-generation lineup, Toyota offered a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder driving through an eight-speed automatic as well as 2.5-litre full-hybrid powertrains using an electronically controlled CVT. Front-wheel drive, 4WD or hybrid E-Four equipment is variant-dependent. The model’s turbo approach can produce a different driving feel from the more conventional gasoline Alphard setup, but no single unverified fuel-consumption figure should be used for all versions. Toyota’s subsequent December 2024 release provides the critical model-year cutoff: the revised variants and new six-seat plug-in hybrid start sales in January 2025.

What to inspect on a used vehicle

Used inspection should focus on how this high-spec people carrier has been used. Examine electric doors, seat rails and reclining functions, both climate-control zones and the electronics controlling screens and cabin features. Check for repaired kerb damage and brake or tyre wear, particularly if the vehicle operated in a dense urban chauffeuring role. Get a clear record of the turbo or hybrid maintenance history and establish whether the vehicle has Japanese-market equipment that is difficult to service after export. Large MPV dimensions and expensive cabin components create ownership considerations not apparent from a short urban test drive.

Who it suits and alternative choices

A Vellfire may suit a buyer who wants a more driver-focused version of Toyota’s luxury MPV formula without giving up chauffeured comfort. An Alphard can be the more conventional alternative, and high-spec family crossovers remain worth comparing for those who do not need sliding doors or multi-row captain’s chairs. The correct choice depends on trim, provenance and the service ecosystem. Never import a January 2025 PHEV specification into this 2024 Japan sale-year article simply because its announcement was dated December 2024.
