An EV traction-battery warranty is a contract with defined triggers, not a promise that the pack will retain its original capacity forever.

Distinguish failure coverage from capacity coverage

Some manufacturers provide separate assurances for defects and retained battery capacity, often with a percentage threshold over a period and distance. The measurement method, applicable production batch, geographic market, qualifying use and required service history can materially change eligibility. US DOE materials note that many manufacturers have offered eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranties; that observation must not be turned into a blanket legal rule for every market.

Which paperwork takes precedence

Read the warranty booklet issued for the vehicle's original sales market and model year, plus any written transfer or extended-coverage terms. A marketing summary, dealership verbal assurance or neighboring country's website is not a substitute. Imported vehicles may have restricted local warranty support and a nominally valid manufacturer warranty may not be honored by every importer.

Diagnosing capacity claims

A warranty threshold usually requires the OEM's prescribed state-of-health measurement or authorized diagnostic path. The dashboard's remaining range is not proof of qualifying degradation. Keep charging and service records, documented fault reports, certified test results and manufacturer case reference numbers when making a claim.

Editorial boundary with maintenance content

This article concerns interpreting coverage; inspection and service tasks stay with AUTO 09. List exact term, threshold and exclusions only in market-year records backed by the proper warranty document. When wording is unknown, status should be 'unverified', not an estimated warranty or assumed eligibility.

Four clauses most summaries omit

A capacity warranty may have a minimum retained-capacity condition measured by a manufacturer-defined test, a mileage or elapsed-time limit, particular exclusions for damage or unauthorized modification, and regional terms governing transfer to a new owner. These provisions can differ between a defective module claim and natural battery degradation. A seller stating 'still under battery warranty' has not established whether deterioration at its present level qualifies for repair, what remedy is provided or whether cross-border coverage follows the car.

Assemble a verification record

Request the original market warranty booklet, first registration date, accurate odometer reading, transfer documentation if relevant, recall records and the manufacturer's current battery diagnostic report. Record any pack replacement or capacity-module repair as a change in the vehicle's component history. Do not infer the coverage of a replacement pack from the original new-car warranty. A public blog quoting a familiar eight-year term cannot replace the written warranty terms applicable to the actual vehicle.

Focused Reader Questions

Does an eight-year warranty promise no degradation?

No. It may contain defect and capacity provisions with defined thresholds, exclusions and approved test methods.

Will warranty coverage cross national borders?

Not necessarily. Original sales region, importer policy, transfer and service conditions need confirmation.

Does a replacement pack reset warranty time?

Do not assume so. Written replacement-part and original-vehicle coverage clauses determine the term.

Does an online SOH estimate automatically qualify?

No. Manufacturer-recognized diagnostic evidence and the contract’s applicable threshold normally govern warranty adjudication.
