ADAS Calibration After Windscreen or Bumper Repair

Why a completed body repair may still require sensor alignment and validation.

EDITORIAL RESEARCHMotorRift

How the system works

An ADAS camera is mounted at a calibrated orientation to the road; a radar behind a grille or bumper also depends on correct alignment. Replacing a windscreen, removing a sensor or repairing collision damage can alter that geometry even if the electronics are intact. IIHS reports that automakers frequently specify calibration after sensors are removed, replaced or reinstalled. A repair that looks cosmetically complete does not automatically establish that camera-based braking or lane support now sees accurately.

What it can and cannot do

Calibration is a manufacturer-specific procedure, not a universal scan-tool button. Depending on the vehicle, it may need correctly positioned static targets, measuring equipment, level floor space, a suitable wheel alignment or a prescribed controlled driving sequence. A dashboard without warning lights does not prove calibration was performed. Some failures become apparent only in less common road scenes. Owners should avoid self-adjusting camera or radar brackets or copying a procedure from a different model year.

What changes between vehicles

A car may have experienced an ordinary glass replacement rather than a collision, yet the forward camera could still require a check. Ask for both the glass invoice and any applicable calibration record. For front-end repairs, check the bumper and radar mounting history. Repair records should identify the vehicle, procedure and outcome rather than use the word 'reset' without explanation. If a safety system behaves abnormally, have it assessed before relying on the feature.

Buying and ownership implications

Suspension changes, vehicle ride height and alignment can affect the assumptions used by sensors. This does not imply that every tyre swap or wheel alignment mandates recalibration; the OEM literature decides which operations trigger which checks. Claims that 'it has self-calibrated after a few miles' should be matched against the exact manufacturer's documented method. The job may involve both mechanical and software inspections and must not be reduced to simply clearing stored faults.

Regional and model-year caveats

From 2020 through 2026, sensor suppliers, windscreens and ADAS packaging changed across refreshes and regional versions of identical-looking vehicles. A part that physically fits may not be electronically compatible. Confirm the original market build and correct parts before comparing costs. This article is about service diligence and safety, not instructions to recalibrate a camera or drive in a way that deliberately challenges emergency braking.
