A 2020–2026 EV can have two legitimate published range figures and neither be an error. One may come from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency procedures and the other from European WLTP certification. Converting miles into kilometres will not convert the underlying test method.
EPA is a US label methodology
The EPA uses prescribed dynamometer driving cycles and adjustments before displaying the range shown on a U.S. label. Manufacturers submit model-year-specific data under defined rules. An EPA number relates to the vehicle version approved for that market, including equipment and drivetrain differences that may not match the similarly named European version.
WLTP is another repeatable lab standard
The European Commission explains that laboratory conditions are deliberately controlled so vehicle results can be compared consistently. Temperature, wind, speeds and driving style on the road will be different. WLTP values are valuable within the relevant certification context; they are not unadjusted predictions of a motorway trip, and should not be placed directly beside EPA numbers as though collected identically.
Make the comparison reproducible
Before ranking two cars, record market, test cycle, year, trim, tyre/wheel option, battery variant and quoted unit. Compare EPA to EPA within the U.S., or WLTP to WLTP within European variants. For a cross-region case study, show the results in separate labelled columns and discuss directionally rather than computing a fake winner. Real-route planning requires its own margin for weather and speed.
A useful showroom experiment
When a comparison website shows one model at a larger numerical range than another, follow the official label back to its exact source. Write down the specification side by side: vehicle country, battery version, wheel size and declared regulatory cycle. If one number came from EPA and the other from WLTP, mark the result not directly comparable. This small discipline prevents a superficially attractive cross-border ranking from guiding an expensive purchase.
Who should choose it?
The strongest buying decision combines like-for-like laboratory results with charging access and an independent road-use evaluation explicitly tied to the tested configuration. A single headline range figure cannot settle the purchase.
Model-year and market scope
Applies as an interpretation guide across 2020–2026 market years. Never infer a global battery size, WLTP range or EPA certification merely because a nameplate is sold on both continents.
