Maruti Suzuki introduced the fourth-generation Swift in India in May 2024 and added an S-CNG derivative in September. Both are part of the same calendar-year buying story, but their fuel-economy units, transmission choices and refuelling needs are different. A 2024 purchase comparison must not invent a direct economy winner from unlike numbers.
The 2024 timeline matters
Maruti’s May release describes the new Z-Series 1.2-litre petrol engine and a manufacturer efficiency claim reaching 25.75 km/l in its most efficient petrol configuration. The September 2024 S-CNG release gives a claim of 32.85 km/kg and specifies a five-speed manual gearbox for its launch variants. A litre of petrol and a kilogram of CNG are different quantities and must not be numerically compared without local energy and price context.
Fuel access is a hidden specification
Check the local CNG network along actual weekly journeys and whether refuelling hours, queues and permitted use match the household routine. For an owner who frequently makes unplanned trips to areas without convenient CNG supply, petrol flexibility may matter even where CNG operating costs could be attractive. Verify the luggage volume of the exact CNG variant in the dated technical brochure; a tank installation may change practical carrying space.
Separate purchase cost from consumption
Convert each officially stated fuel-consumption figure into expense per kilometre using the correct fuel unit and current local prices, clearly labelled as a manufacturer comparison scenario. Add the petrol and CNG cars’ real quotations, registration, insurance and service terms. Inspect manual-transmission suitability in congested traffic. The available evidence does not support an independently measured test result, projected resale premium or blanket recommendation for every Indian city.
Who should choose it?
Choose the 2024 Swift S-CNG when local fuel access, manual transmission and the actual cost calculation make it useful. The petrol variant remains a rational option where refuelling convenience, grade choice and use pattern matter more than a promotional efficiency claim.
Model-year and market scope
India calendar-2024 launch period only. The 2024 S-CNG is not assumed to be on sale before September; economy claims use different fuel units and are not an apples-to-apples numeric ranking.
