What the 2020 designation actually covers

Ford presented the new Puma as a European compact crossover at the beginning of 2020, and its identity must not be confused with the much older Puma coupé. It takes the shape of a five-door high-riding hatch rather than a rugged off-road SUV. The original launch documents emphasize an unusually practical load compartment and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Buyers should distinguish the early EcoBoost Hybrid from later specification revisions and from the separately marketed performance-oriented Puma ST.

Powertrains and specification boundaries

The original electrified powertrains combine a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a belt-driven integrated starter-generator and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery. Ford quoted 125 PS and 155 PS versions; the 11.5-kW starter-generator harvests braking energy and assists combustion rather than powering the car independently for meaningful distances. It therefore requires petrol and should never be represented as a plug-in hybrid or full electric vehicle. The installed gearbox and individual emissions label deserve verification for each country.

Space, driving purpose and everyday compromises

The appeal is the combination of agile city dimensions with clever luggage packaging: the washable lower storage compartment can be more useful than the nominal hatchback footprint implies. Against that, the elevated roofline does not make this a spacious seven-seat family car, and wheel and suspension specifications change the everyday ride. Ford marketed extensive driver-assistance options, but they were not all standard on every Titanium, ST-Line or luxury-themed derivative. Match the equipment to the car's actual build.

A sensible second-hand inspection in 2026

A 2026 used buyer should inspect the service history for the exact turbocharged petrol engine, listen for abnormal cold-start noises, assess clutch operation on manuals, and check that the electrical assistance system has no outstanding warning messages. Test the boot well and its drains for evidence of water or damage. Check the tyres for uneven wear and inspect the underside if the car has seen rough urban surfaces. These are prudent inspection points, not claims of a proven failure rate.

Alternatives and the buying decision

The Puma suits a driver who wants small-car manoeuvrability with a notably useful boot and does not need four driven wheels. It is less persuasive for buyers prioritising maximum rear-seat room or towing. Volkswagen T-Cross, Renault Captur and Skoda Kamiq are useful period competitors, but their engines and transmissions differ significantly. Compare actual advertised 2020-market cars rather than headline power figures from later brochures.
