VEHICLE OVERVIEWMotorRift

Vehicle scope: calendar-year 2020 introduction or documented sale in KR; RG3 third-generation, sedan. Market/trim verification remains essential.

Documented configuration: Korean 2.5L turbo petrol 304PS; 3.5L turbo petrol 380PS; 2.2L diesel 210PS; RWD or AWD. A quoted range or economy cycle, where present, applies only to its stated market and test procedure.

The 2020 vehicle and its actual year boundary

Genesis launched the third-generation G80 on 30 March 2020 in South Korea, explicitly warning that its published specifications reflected the Korean market. The RG3 car is a fresh generation rather than a facelift of the earlier DH vehicle. It should not be flattened into an American MY2020 G80 record, where different generation/year combinations were marketed.

Verified powertrains and technical limits

Genesis’s launch table lists the 2.5-litre turbo petrol at 304PS, the 3.5-litre turbo petrol at 380PS and a 2.2-litre diesel at 210PS, with rear-drive and all-wheel-drive choices. These are metric horsepower values and not an invitation to label every figure SAE hp. Wheelbase and external size position the G80 as an executive sedan with a long cabin rather than a compact sports model.

What it is like to live with this configuration

The G80’s priorities are cabin calm, rear-seat comfort and significant available technology. The smaller turbo petrol is a different ownership proposition from the 3.5-litre engine, and diesel suitability depends on journey type and local emission rules. Options such as remote parking and elaborate assistance functions require more attention to electronic operation than a simple used saloon. A premium sedan’s long-term value is tied not only to its engine but also to the condition of expensive interior electronics. Test rear-seat controls, power accessories, acoustic systems and all driver-assist displays. Where the vehicle was privately imported, verify that parts, diagnostic software and technical support exist in the destination country.

What a used buyer should check in 2026

Check the chassis-generation identifier, engine and original Korean specification; avoid assuming a North American review describes the precise car. Inspect all displays, seats, cameras and active assistance equipment, and obtain proper gearbox, cooling, tyre and suspension service records. Buyers should confirm local workshop and software support for imported vehicles.

Alternatives and the decision

BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Lexus ES are comparable executive-sedan choices with different drivetrains and front/rear-drive philosophies. The Genesis GV80 shares luxury ambitions but offers a completely different SUV ownership profile.
