Market and date basis: IN: documented calendar-year 2020 availability, not an unverified formal MY2020 designation.
What the 2020 designation actually covers
The original second-generation Mahindra Thar launched in India in October 2020 after an August unveiling. It is an important generation break from the earlier utilitarian Thar, bringing substantially updated cabins and a choice of modern petrol and diesel powertrains while retaining a real off-road transfer case. The 2020 launch record is specifically four-wheel drive: later rear-wheel-drive variants should not be retrofitted into this profile simply because they share the Thar name.
Powertrains and specification boundaries
Mahindra documented a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol at 112 kW/150 bhp and 320 Nm, plus a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel at 97 kW/130 bhp and 320 Nm in its 2020 release. Both were offered with six-speed manual and torque-converter automatic transmissions and a manually selected 4×4 transfer case including low range. Those figures are launch manufacturer ratings; the owner should check registration, trim and any subsequent mechanical alterations.
Space, driving purpose and everyday compromises
The case for a Thar is off-road geometry, part-time transfer-case flexibility and an enjoyable upright driving character. The opposite side of that design is reduced day-to-day refinement and manoeuvring compared with a road-biased crossover. Hard-top and convertible configurations were offered, and seating arrangements were not uniform across the range. Buyers transporting children should prioritise the exact approved seat arrangement and restraint provision, not simply the advertised number of seats.
A sensible second-hand inspection in 2026
Check for off-road impacts beneath the chassis, differential housings, transfer-case function and water entry around removable roof or door assemblies. A used example with oversized tyres, suspension lifts or power modifications requires specialist verification, not praise for added capability. Confirm whether its automatic or manual behaves correctly at low speed and during shifts between appropriate transfer-case positions as specified in its manual. A road test alone cannot substitute for documented repair history.
Alternatives and the buying decision
Choose this original 2020 Thar when authentic four-wheel-drive ability is central to the decision and you accept the compromises of a traditional SUV. If road comfort, luggage volume or rear-seat access dominate, Hyundai Creta or Tata Harrier may be more suitable. Suzuki Jimny is a useful off-road comparison where sold, but market availability and engine options must be checked. Avoid applying later Thar RWD pricing or equipment to the 2020 launch vehicle.
