The S-Presso launched in India in September 2019 and was firmly an on-sale BS6-compliant affordable vehicle during 2020. Maruti styled its tall hatchback with mini-SUV design cues, but the shape should not be confused with a genuine four-wheel-drive drivetrain. It is a small front-drive urban car and should be compared with cars serving that real use case.
Powertrains and documented specifications
Maruti introduced the 1.0-litre K10 petrol engine with BS6 compliance and both manual and automated Auto Gear Shift versions. The quoted 21.7 km/L manufacturer fuel-efficiency figure belongs to the launch specification and Indian certification context; it is not a measured real-world result or equivalent to the European WLTP methodology.
Changes and timing that matter
Tall front seating and a practical dashboard layout can simplify daily driving, especially when frequent short trips dominate. The relatively narrow shell, modest engine and lightweight structure are compromises when carrying five people or joining fast highway traffic. Equipment depends on the variant, so check whether the used example actually has the promised touchscreen, power features and restraints.
Everyday usability and equipment
An automated-manual AGS may be convenient for urban users but has a distinct low-speed shift character compared with a torque-converter automatic. Try a full reverse-and-parking cycle and an uphill start. Avoid assuming an older BS6 engine can use the servicing schedule of a later S-Presso revision with a different engine family.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
Inspect clutch operation or AGS actuator behaviour, suspension wear, tyre and wheel condition, underside knocks and any prior structural damage. Verify current safety/recall information from regulator and manufacturer using the exact VIN; do not infer protection from Maruti’s description of steel usage in promotional material.
Alternatives and who it suits
Compare the Alto, WagonR and Renault Kwid for city transport; a used hatchback from the class above may offer different comfort and storage trade-offs. The S-Presso’s appeal is simple packaging with affordable mechanical layout, provided the buyer accepts the engine’s limitations and checks individual condition.
