The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary

India’s third-generation WagonR debuted in January 2019 and carried into 2020, with its expanded BS6 powertrain range already being delivered. Maruti introduced a BS6-compatible factory S-CNG variant in February 2020. It would be inaccurate to collapse the earlier generation or later dual-jet models into this third-generation 2020 description.

Powertrains and documented specifications

The 2019 manufacturer release identified a 1.0-litre and a 1.2-litre K-series petrol choice with manual or Auto Gear Shift automated manual versions. The later BS6 implementation and S-CNG variant require checking the car’s actual engine and fuel system: a gas cylinder-equipped WagonR is not just the same petrol vehicle with a different fuel label.

Changes and timing that matter

In February 2020 Maruti quoted a 32.52 km/kg figure for the specific new WagonR S-CNG version, under its Indian fuel certification. That is a mass-per-distance compressed-natural-gas unit, not petrol km/L or any EPA-cycle comparison. Legal inspection of cylinder age, mounts, valves and lines is indispensable in a used example.

Everyday usability and equipment

The high roof and upright doors are among the WagonR’s strongest everyday assets. They support easy entry and useful front and rear visibility in narrow streets, but taller stance and small-wheel suspension require realistic expectations on open highways. The balance is well suited to stop-start commuting and short family journeys.

Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026

When buying used, test the actual gearbox under low-speed manoeuvres, inspect suspension bushings, clutch behavior, steering, tyres and previous collision repairs. A factory CNG example needs verified tank records and competent gas-system examination; do not accept improvised installations or assume factory protections survive modifications.

Alternatives and who it suits

Alto is the simpler, smaller alternative while Celerio and S-Presso share some city-transport priorities. Compare a 1.0 or 1.2 petrol WagonR and a factory CNG car on documented operating needs, not a single blended mileage number. Confirm the recorded engine code before parts or service decisions.
