The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary
Suzuki’s second-generation Spacia series received a specifically dated Japanese equipment revision on 20 August 2020. Spacia, Spacia Custom and Spacia Gear were part of the family; these are different styling/equipment treatments and should normally be nested under the same underlying generation rather than multiplied into unrelated country pages.
Powertrains and documented specifications
Suzuki’s August price and technical table lists 0.66-litre DOHC mild-hybrid petrol with CVT, 2WD and 4WD, plus turbo versions of the Custom and Gear. For example the Japanese Spacia Hybrid G 2WD was rated 22.2 km/L on WLTC while the Hybrid X 2WD was rated 21.2 km/L. These figures are Japan WLTC, not American EPA mpg or the older JC08 values published in adjacent columns.
Changes and timing that matter
The meaningful change was broader preventative-safety equipment: dual-camera emergency braking detection was enhanced for night pedestrians, additional curtain airbags were fitted to applicable safety-equipped grades and full-speed adaptive cruise was introduced in selected versions. Buyers must still examine the optional driver-aid package because Suzuki explicitly excluded variants without the Suzuki Safety Support equipment.
Everyday usability and equipment
Like its rivals, Spacia wins on sliding-door practicality, interior height and easy urban manoeuvring. The light mild-hybrid assistance is not a plug-in system and does not create an independent electric-only driving range. A taller body can be buffeted by wind and will not behave like a larger saloon at sustained motorway speeds.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
Used-car inspection should include sliding-door rollers and motor function, 12-volt and hybrid-assist electrical warnings, accident repairs around front cameras, air-conditioning and correct tyre load index. Check the service history on the precise turbo or non-turbo engine rather than transferring one interval to every 660 cc Suzuki.
Alternatives and who it suits
The Honda N-BOX emphasizes a different seat-and-door layout; the Daihatsu Tanto has its own unusual side-door arrangement. Test the actual family’s child-seat and cargo needs before deciding. Avoid using a later-generation Spacia brochure to claim safety equipment or consumption for this August 2020 vehicle.
