2021 BMW 4 Series Coupé — US model year
The U.S.-market 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe introduced the second-generation G22 body, distinct from the 3 Series sedan and from later 4 Series Gran Coupé bodywork. A much taller grille generated the headlines, but engine selection, drivetrain and front-seat ergonomics have greater impact on ownership. The 430i and M440i are materially different performance tiers within the same model-year and generation.
Model identity and documented powertrains
BMW’s U.S. period launch sheet specifies 255 hp and 294 lb-ft from the 2.0-liter turbocharged 430i, available in rear- or xDrive all-wheel-drive forms. The M440i xDrive uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six rated at 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. The listed coupes use automatic gearboxes; a manual transmission should not be inferred from BMW’s broader performance catalogue. Brake packages and active chassis options differ by grade and original order.
- 430i: 2.0 L turbo I4, 255 hp, 294 lb-ft; 8-speed Sport Steptronic; RWD
- 430i xDrive: 2.0 L turbo I4, 255 hp, 294 lb-ft; 8-speed Sport Steptronic; AWD
- M440i xDrive: 3.0 L turbo I6, 382 hp, 369 lb-ft; 8-speed Sport Steptronic; AWD
Where the 2021 version makes sense
The G22 can suit an owner who wants long-distance stability, a rear-drive coupe silhouette and a useful level of everyday refinement. A 430i can give a lower-cost entry to the body style, particularly for buyers not regularly using the extra output of the M440i. The M440i’s additional torque and chassis equipment may appeal to drivers who value effortless acceleration, while xDrive adds weight and another system to service.
Limitations and market distinctions
Rear-seat access is intrinsically compromised by the two-door design, and a coupe boot is less flexible than the opening of a liftback. Large wheels and optional sports tires change noise, tire replacement cost and comfort. Driver aids such as adaptive cruise and extended traffic-jam assistance appeared in packages and cannot be presumed to exist on every car from the same year. Exterior trim photographs are a poor substitute for the factory option sheet.
Buying used in 2026
Retrieve original build data and service history before comparing two apparently identical 430i listings. Check for accident repairs, wheel damage, tire-size mismatches and signs of engine or electronic tuning. Inspect the cooling system and electronic controls with a qualified specialist according to the fitted engine. A Toyota GR Supra provides a very different two-seat performance focus, while a 3 Series sedan solves the practicality compromise for owners needing rear doors.
