2021 BYD Qin PLUS DM-i — first-generation Qin PLUS (CN)
BYD’s Qin PLUS DM-i arrived in Chinese dealerships in March 2021 as an electrified compact sedan designed around electric-led daily use rather than the conventional petrol-only economy-car formula. It is a distinct Qin PLUS product, not an automatic alias of earlier Qin or Qin Pro models. The 2021 introduction included multiple electric-range and equipment configurations; later Qin PLUS refreshes and export versions should not be treated as the same technical package.
Verified 2021 identity and market specifications
BYD’s 2021 launch documents identify its dedicated naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, EHS electric-hybrid drive system and DM-i Blade Battery. At launch the Chinese-market versions were marketed with 55 km and 120 km pure-electric-range specifications under the original Chinese test framework, rather than EPA or European WLTP approvals. The longer-range version was not merely a software unlock for the shorter one. BYD’s headline low-fuel-consumption and full-tank range numbers are manufacturer-period claims, not independent verified results.

Who it suits and trade-offs
A Qin PLUS DM-i makes most sense for someone who can regularly charge but still needs flexibility on trips beyond the convenient charging network. Buyers comparing it with a Toyota Corolla Hybrid should recognize that the Toyota’s conventional hybrid does not offer the same plug-in operating mode. Conversely, where home charging is unavailable the BYD’s additional battery equipment may offer a less compelling ownership compromise than a non-plug-in hybrid.
2026 used-buyer inspection priorities
Ask for evidence of the actual 55 km or 120 km version, verify charge-port and battery diagnostic status, check service and recall records for the exact VIN, and investigate any accident involving the battery enclosure. A claimed total range from a 2021 Chinese advertisement should never be used to estimate a particular car’s remaining range in 2026. Regional communications and connected-app support are also relevant for cars imported beyond their original Chinese market.
Alternatives and model-year boundaries
The Qin PLUS DM-i is a meaningful 2021 step in mass-market plug-in hybrids. Its strengths are flexible short-trip electric operation and a sedan-sized passenger layout; constraints involve charging access, verifying the precise launch-year battery configuration and avoiding direct EPA-to-NEDC numeric comparisons.
