2021 Citroën C4 / ë-C4 — EU sale year

Europe’s 2021 Citroën C4 and fully electric ë-C4 share a distinctive high-riding fastback outline, but they do not share their energy systems. The petrol, diesel and EV choices create meaningful differences in long-trip convenience and everyday operating cost. This profile covers the European third-generation car launched at the start of 2021 rather than older C4 hatchbacks or later redesigned variants.

Model identity and documented powertrains

Citroën’s launch sheet distinguishes PureTech petrol engines spanning 100 to 155 hp in the described international range and BlueHDi diesel engines at 110 or 130 hp. Examples include the 130-PS petrol with a six-speed manual or EAT8 automatic and a 130-PS diesel EAT8. The ë-C4 instead uses a 100-kW/136-hp electric drive system and a manufacturer-described 50-kWh battery. Do not infer usable battery capacity from that headline figure or attach a test cycle to an unqualified range sentence.

  • PureTech 130 petrol: 1.2 L turbo petrol, 130 PS; 6-speed manual or EAT8 automatic; FWD
  • BlueHDi 130 diesel: 1.5 L turbo-diesel, 130 PS; EAT8 automatic; FWD
  • ë-C4 electric: electric motor, 100 kW/136 hp; single-speed reduction gear; FWD; battery_kWh: 50 manufacturer headline capacity; gross/usable not established here

Where the 2021 version makes sense

The raised seating feel and progressive hydraulic cushion suspension strategy are aimed at road comfort, not rugged-trail capability. Higher specification cabins can create a pleasant long-distance environment without requiring a conventional SUV footprint. Electric ë-C4 ownership can work well where home or workplace charging is predictable, while the petrol and diesel variants accommodate people who cannot charge and cover mixed longer distances.

Limitations and market distinctions

An ë-C4 battery figure is not directly comparable to a petrol tank and does not by itself establish winter or motorway range. Its charging suitability must be checked against local infrastructure and the vehicle’s actual socket and software. Diesel makes less sense if most journeys are brief and cold, particularly where local emissions policies restrict older vehicles. The unusual rear shape also merits a physical visibility and loading test.

Buying used in 2026

Confirm battery health and charge records on a used ë-C4, and check for uneven tire wear and underbody damage regardless of powertrain. On petrol and diesel cars, obtain the exact engine code, original market maintenance schedule and evidence of the correct consumables, rather than assuming all 2021 C4s are mechanically alike. Consider Peugeot 2008 for a more traditional small-SUV posture or a Volkswagen Golf for a lower conventional hatchback stance.
