2021 Kia Sonet — IN sale year

The India-market Kia Sonet sold during 2021 is a compact, high-roof crossover built around urban manoeuvrability rather than serious off-road ability. The 2021 sales year matters: it includes a trim and equipment reshuffle in May, while the mechanical choices belong to the original Sonet generation introduced in 2020. The headline attraction is how many different powertrain experiences can exist behind almost identical bodywork.

Model identity and documented powertrains

Kia’s 2021 brochure specifies a naturally aspirated 1,197 cc petrol with a five-speed manual, a turbocharged 998 cc direct-injection petrol with iMT or dual-clutch transmission, and two 1,493 cc diesel outputs distinguished by gearbox. The stronger diesel automatic is not simply a software label for the 100 PS diesel manual. The iMT removes the conventional clutch pedal but still requires manual gear selection; confusing it with a regular automatic gives the wrong buying expectation.

  • 1.2 petrol manual: 1,197 cc 83 PS petrol; 5-speed manual; FWD; torque_Nm: 115
  • 1.0 turbo petrol: 998 cc 120 PS GDI turbo petrol; 6-speed iMT or 7-speed DCT; FWD; torque_Nm: 172
  • 1.5 diesel manual: 1,493 cc 100 PS CRDi WGT; 6-speed manual; FWD; torque_Nm: 240
  • 1.5 diesel automatic: 1,493 cc 115 PS CRDi VGT; 6-speed torque-converter automatic; FWD; torque_Nm: 250

Where the 2021 version makes sense

For primarily short local trips, the simpler 1.2 petrol and manual layout may suit an owner who values predictable servicing and lower purchase complexity. The turbo petrol makes a more flexible motorway proposition, while the diesel alternatives reward a buyer who covers longer distances and has appropriate local emissions access. Equipment is much more variable than Sonet exterior styling suggests: ventilated seating, Bose audio and bigger navigation screens belonged to specified higher grades, not every 2021 example.

Limitations and market distinctions

Cabin width and rear-seat comfort must be tried rather than assumed from the SUV profile. A compact rear bench and 3,995 mm exterior length constrain its role as a long-distance five-adult vehicle. Because the original 2020 launch and May 2021 revision have different trim matrices, an advertised HTX or GTX+ badge is not a complete specification. Check the original invoice, build period and actual installed equipment before comparing two cars.

Buying used in 2026

For a used turbo DCT Sonet, include a deliberate low-speed gearbox operation check and service-record review; this is an inspection step, not a claim that all such units fail. For the diesel, inspect emissions-system condition according to the car’s duty cycle. Verify tire size against its grade-specific placard, and assess whether the prospective driver wants clutch-free iMT shifting or fully automated transmission behaviour. Cross-shop Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Renault Kiger only against equivalent Indian powertrains.
