2021 Maruti Suzuki Baleno: 2nd generation
The 2021 Indian Maruti Suzuki Baleno was an established premium hatchback approaching the end of its original generation, not the substantially revised 2022 model. That makes its real engine and transmission menu especially important on the used market. A CVT-equipped petrol Baleno and a manual Dualjet Smart Hybrid are different hardware packages despite the same familiar nameplate.
Which 2021 vehicle is this?
Introduced in 2015 and facelifted in 2019, the Baleno was still sold strongly through 2021. Maruti’s December 2021 company release confirms continued sales and describes the 1.2-liter Dualjet Dual VVT Smart Hybrid. Earlier factory material documents the original 1.2-liter conventional petrol and CVT choices. This entry covers the pre-2022 Indian car rather than the subsequent new Baleno.
This profile applies to India and identifies a vehicle offered during calendar 2021. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.
Documented 2021 powertrain and specifications
IN — BS6 India pre-2022 Baleno 1.2 K12 petrol and Dualjet Smart Hybrid. Manufacturer data are reproduced with their original units and testing context; no independent road-test results are claimed.
Powertrain: 1.2 L K12-series petrol; 1.2 L Dualjet Dual VVT mild hybrid on designated grades
Transmission: Five-speed manual; CVT restricted to regular petrol range in original launch matrix
Driven wheels: FWD
Original launch year: 2015, facelift 2019; calendar-2021 sales are not 2022 redesign
Engine setup: 1.2L petrol K12 with optional Dualjet Smart Hybrid lithium-ion assist
Fuel economy: 23.87 km/L manufacturer claim for Dualjet Smart Hybrid original model
Efficiency/range protocol: Indian certified 23.87 km/L Baleno Smart Hybrid variant; not WLTP
What matters in everyday ownership
A light hatchback footprint, practical back seat and city-focused powertrains suit commuters and small households. The Dualjet’s mild-hybrid assist supports idle stop and regenerative energy recovery, but it cannot be charged by cable and should not be marketed as an EV. The company quoted 23.87 km/L for that configuration under its India-specific test basis; another grade or a hard urban route will differ.
Used-buying checks in 2026
Identify the engine code, transmission and grade from original Maruti build information. Check CVT function on any CVT vehicle or clutch wear on the manual, followed by service history, suspension wear and signs of structural repair. For mild-hybrid cars, confirm that the energy recovery and auxiliary battery system are working normally. Verify the safety equipment actually fitted rather than borrowing 2022 facelift features.
Alternatives and limits
Hyundai i20 provides a different balance of cabin finish and engine choices, while Tata Altroz brings another Indian hatchback proposition. A 2022 Baleno must be researched separately because the update changes equipment and variant assumptions. Choosing between a manual Dualjet and CVT regular petrol is primarily about commuting convenience and the actual test-drive experience.
