2021 MG ZS EV: 1st generation pre-facelift
Two very different MG ZS EVs can appear in the same year’s European used listings. A car registered in early 2021 may be the pre-facelift 44.5-kWh model, whereas the substantial later update looks similar at a glance but supplies a much larger battery. Correctly identifying the front end and technical configuration prevents one of the easiest electric-car range mistakes.
Which 2021 vehicle is this?
This entry covers the original pre-facelift European ZS EV still relevant in the 2021 calendar-year market. MG explicitly compared the previous 44.5-kWh car with its revised 2021 successor and quoted the earlier 263-km WLTP distance. It would be wrong to assign the facelift’s 440-km WLTP Long Range figure to the older car.
This profile applies to documented European markets and identifies a vehicle offered during calendar 2021. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.
Documented 2021 powertrain and specifications
EU — Pre-facelift European ZS EV carried into early 2021. Manufacturer data are reproduced with their original units and testing context; no independent road-test results are claimed.
Powertrain: Battery-electric front motor rated 105 kW / 143 PS in January–October 2021 German Luxury grade
Transmission: Single-speed EV reduction gear
Driven wheels: FWD
Pre-facelift traction battery: 44.5 kWh manufacturer stated
Pre-facelift AC on-board charging: 6.6 kW
2021 generation boundary: Later 2021 facelift offered different 70 kWh battery and face
Efficiency/range protocol: Pre-facelift MG stated 263 km WLTP; not facelift 440-km figure
What matters in everyday ownership
The ZS EV’s appeal is conventional crossover space at a comparatively accessible position in the used-electric market. For mostly urban journeys with dependable charging, the older pack can be adequate, but motorway flexibility must be considered conservatively. The lower AC charging capability also matters in places where most charging opportunities are slower destination sockets.
Used-buying checks in 2026
Confirm pre- or post-facelift status through manufacturing records and physical equipment. Ask for an independent battery assessment, verify AC and DC charging on compatible stations and determine whether updates were completed. Range quotes on classified websites frequently borrow data from the wrong revision. Rear seats, tire condition, 12-volt battery behavior and service history still deserve routine scrutiny.
Alternatives and limits
The later 2021 ZS EV facelift is the most direct comparison but costs and charges differently. Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia e-Niro offer other crossover-sized EV packaging, each with its own battery variants and test-cycle differences. If occasional very long journeys dominate, compare the total charging plan rather than a single WLTP number.
