2021 NIO EC6: 1st generation

The NIO EC6 occupied the sleeker end of China’s premium electric SUV market in 2021, pairing coupé-like rear styling with a more performance-oriented electric drivetrain. Its shape sacrifices some rear-headroom and load-opening practicality compared with a square-backed ES6, but creates a different ownership choice even when platforms and electric components are related.

Which 2021 vehicle is this?

NIO began delivering the original EC6 in September 2020, and the April 2021 delivery report records 2,416 EC6 customer vehicles in that month alone. This entry is the early first-generation EC6, not NIO’s later-model EC7 or next-platform replacements. NIO’s launch technical material gives a 160-kW front permanent-magnet motor and a 240-kW rear induction motor for the Performance version.

This profile applies to China and identifies a vehicle offered during calendar 2021. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.

Documented 2021 powertrain and specifications

What matters in everyday ownership

The EC6 offers a rapid, quiet and premium electric SUV experience for a driver who values design over a fully upright cargo hold. Its optional 100-kWh pack was associated with a company claim of up to 615 km under China’s NEDC cycle; that cannot be compared as if it were an American EPA range. Models with the smaller pack and different motor packages require their own official variant checks.

Used-buying checks in 2026

Ask whether the battery is owned with the vehicle or provided through a transferable NIO BaaS contract. Verify the original motor and battery combinations, and confirm access to local battery-swap stations before making the convenience claim. Independent diagnostics, software/account eligibility, tire condition and collision repairs are critical; imported EC6 vehicles may lose connected features.

Alternatives and limits

NIO ES6 offers a squarer rear and broadly related electric architecture. XPeng P7 is a low sedan, while Tesla Model Y represents a different charging network and packaging ecosystem. A buyer who often loads tall equipment or large pets should physically compare the EC6 with a conventional SUV before choosing based on styling alone.
