2021 NIO ES8: 1st generation
NIO’s ES8 was a substantial three-row premium electric SUV well before many Western manufacturers offered comparable seating choices. The 2021 Chinese-market car was not a completely new generation; it continued the significantly revised ES8 that first reached customers in April 2020. Seating, motor hardware and the chosen battery subscription all deserve more attention than the large exterior dimensions alone.
Which 2021 vehicle is this?
The refreshed early-generation ES8 came with over 180 NIO-stated upgrades and offered six- or seven-seat layouts. For the documented configuration, the front electric motor produces 160 kW and the rear induction motor 240 kW. NIO reported 1,523 ES8 deliveries during April 2021. Do not confuse it with the fundamentally new second-platform ES8 presented in late 2022.
This profile applies to China and identifies a vehicle offered during calendar 2021. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.

What matters in everyday ownership
An ES8 can serve households needing a genuine extra seating row without returning to petrol propulsion, although luggage room behind occupied third-row seats needs realistic inspection. The cabin and active safety package must be checked by trim rather than assuming every optional feature was standard. A 100-kWh pack could offer up to 580 km NEDC in manufacturer literature, which is not a promise of real motorway distance.
Used-buying checks in 2026
Count the actual seats and assess third-row belts and anchorage, then verify whether the battery is owned outright or subject to a transferable subscription. Confirm service access, battery diagnostics, vehicle account permissions, charging connector type and battery-swap network reach. Expensive electronic and suspension components should be inspected with a qualified specialist before a cross-border import.
Alternatives and limits
NIO ES6 is easier to maneuver but lacks the ES8’s seven-seat role; the EC6 offers a more coupe-like roof and different load geometry. Tesla Model X is another three-row-capable premium EV, albeit with different design and charging support. Families concerned with routine long journeys should compare actual charging and route infrastructure rather than only nominal pack size.
