2021 Tata Punch: first generation / ALFA-ARC — IN
Model-year identity and market scope
The Tata Punch launched in India in October 2021 as an upright small crossover within a hatchback-sized footprint. Tata named the ALFA-ARC architecture and gave the car SUV-like styling rather than the dimensions of a large off-road SUV. Because later Punch EV and CNG variants have different packaging and powertrains, a 2021 petrol Punch must not inherit their battery, charging or fuel-cylinder descriptions.
2021 powertrains and engineering
Tata’s October 2021 technical note identifies a 1,199-cc naturally aspirated three-cylinder Revotron petrol engine developing 63 kW/86 PS and 113 Nm. Buyers chose a five-speed manual or a five-speed automated manual transmission; this AMT is not a conventional torque-converter automatic or CVT. The launch sheet gave a 3,827-mm overall length and 2,445-mm wheelbase, with 366 litres of luggage space by the specified ISO V215 method. Those measurements should not be replaced with contemporary facelifts or later motor choices.

Equipment, competitors and practical differences
Initially Tata organized the range into Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative personas. Availability of the larger display, climate-control conveniences, connected services and particular wheel sizes therefore depends on grade and optional packs. The raised seating position may help urban visibility, but the external proportions remain those of a small crossover; the three-cylinder engine is designed for modest-cost transport rather than fast motorway overtaking with a full passenger load.
Who should buy it, and who might prefer an alternative?
For buyers comparing the Punch with the Maruti Swift, the practical distinction is upright access and SUV-style seating rather than an objectively larger engine. Against Tata’s Nexon, the Punch offers a different cost and size proposition. AMT shoppers should experience low-speed shift behavior in traffic because it will not feel like the hydraulic automatic of a larger SUV. Original Indian fuel-consumption claims are not a basis for foreign WLTP or EPA comparison.
What a 2026 used buyer should verify
Check the engine/AMT pairing, service records, real tire condition, rear-seat adjustment and door seals. Verify the original 2021 package before expecting connected features. Tata’s safety marketing should not be generalized into a global crash-score promise for every trim and region, and all recall eligibility should be checked against the specific VIN.
