2021 Škoda Octavia — UK sale year

The fourth-generation Škoda Octavia was sold in Britain through 2021 as a practical liftback and estate, with a powertrain range broader than the common petrol-or-diesel shorthand. It is especially important to distinguish the electrically assisted e-TEC mild hybrids from the rechargeable iV plug-in hybrids. Their different transmissions, batteries and luggage packaging change how a used buyer should compare examples.

Model identity and documented powertrains

Škoda UK’s original launch material identifies 1.5 TSI petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel derivatives alongside the new bodystyles. Its later period release describes the 150-kW/204-PS Octavia iV and the 180-kW/245-PS vRS iV, both using a six-speed DSG with shift-by-wire selection. The iV battery and supporting components reduce the stated luggage capacity relative to comparable conventional cars; the manufacturer quotes 450 liters for the iV hatch and 490 liters for the iV estate.

  • 1.5 TSI manual: 1.5 L TSI 150 PS petrol; 6-speed manual; FWD
  • Octavia iV plug-in hybrid: 1.4 L turbo petrol plus electric motor, combined 150 kW/204 PS; 6-speed DSG; FWD
  • vRS iV PHEV: combined 180 kW/245 PS petrol-electric system; 6-speed DSG; FWD

Where the 2021 version makes sense

The appeal of a conventional Octavia is unusually straightforward: a long usable boot, familiar front-drive packaging and space for family errands without SUV height. For an owner who can charge at home, the iV provides a different daily energy-use proposition; without dependable charging it adds complexity without fully exploiting its electric capability. The vRS iV targets drivers who want stronger acceleration, and should not be described as simply a styling pack.

Limitations and market distinctions

Do not compare claimed EV-only distance or fuel consumption from a plug-in hybrid directly with a conventional 1.5 TSI unless the same driving and charging conditions are defined. Estate rooflines improve load access, but a heavily specified car can bring larger wheels and higher replacement costs. A seemingly cheap iV merits a check of charging hardware and usable cargo space before committing.

Buying used in 2026

Request a battery/charging system inspection for iV and verify that the correct cable accompanies the vehicle. On DSG variants, pay attention to clutch engagement, diagnostic codes and the exact maintenance specification without inventing a universal service interval. Examine estate tailgates and boot-floor water seals, and identify trim-specific driver aids from the original order sheet. A Golf is a logical mechanical neighbour, but Octavia’s liftback/estate packaging is its main reason to buy.
