2022 Subaru WRX: Specifications, Variants and Buying Guide
2022 Subaru WRX — this record documents the US formal model-year configuration of the sedan. It does not assume a single worldwide drivetrain, certified range or equipment list.
What changed and why it matters
The 2022 Subaru WRX introduced a new generation of the all-wheel-drive sport sedan familiar to enthusiasts, this time with a larger 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine and Subaru's global architecture. Its styling, cabin and available automatic transmission changed significantly from the preceding WRX. The crucial ownership question remains whether a buyer wants the direct involvement of a manual performance sedan or a more convenience-oriented automatic grade; the latter is not simply a manual car with one pedal missing.
Powertrains, batteries and 2022 market specifications
- US · Base / Premium / Limited manual — 2.4 L turbocharged flat-four gasoline; AWD; 6-speed manual. engine displacement l: 2.4; output hp: 271; torque lb ft: 258; motor configuration: flat-four turbo.
- US · WRX GT automatic — 2.4 L turbocharged flat-four gasoline; AWD; Subaru Performance Transmission. engine displacement l: 2.4; output hp: 271; suspension: electronically controlled dampers, GT.
Who should consider it?
Subaru's U.S. brochure states 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft from the turbocharged flat-four, with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. A six-speed manual is available, while Subaru Performance Transmission is an automatic-style continuously variable unit with programmed ratio behavior. The GT specifically adds electronically controlled dampers, selectable drive modes and Recaro front seats. Those high-grade features cannot be assumed to appear in a base, Premium or Limited example.
Ownership trade-offs and limitations
A WRX rewards a driver who values traction, practical rear seats and responsive turbocharged performance over maximum fuel thrift. It also comes with the higher tire, brake and maintenance attention expected of a sport sedan. A second-hand buyer should look for evidence of modifications, engine tuning, clutch wear on manual cars, and consistent oil-service records. None of those possible inspection needs is proof that the 2022 generation has a particular statistically established failure problem.
Worthwhile alternatives
A Volkswagen Golf GTI prioritizes a front-wheel-drive hatchback format, while the Golf R provides another all-wheel-drive performance concept at a different price. A Hyundai Elantra N offers front-drive track-influenced behavior, and a regular Subaru Impreza suits drivers needing more modest running costs. The WRX is most suitable for a driver actively seeking its combination of turbocharged boxer character and AWD, and willing to pay the associated insurance and consumables costs.
2022 identity and data caveats
The U.S. 2022 brochure was checked directly, including the trim page; its driver-assistance features are transmission- and trim-dependent, not universal.
