2023 BMW i5 — Sedan Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 documented regional sale year; EU market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
BMW's first i5 began European deliveries in October 2023 as the battery-electric member of the eighth-generation 5 Series sedan. That is a genuine 2023 European sales-year vehicle even though BMW's American launch material calls the local G60 a 2024 model-year car. This page therefore uses German/European WLTP specifications and must never transfer them to a fictitious US MY2023 i5 record.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
BMW's global October launch identified the i5 eDrive40 with up to 250 kW/340 hp and 498–582 km of WLTP range, and the M60 xDrive with up to 442 kW/601 hp and 455–516 km WLTP. Those ranges reflect equipment-dependent certification, not one guaranteed distance for all wheels and options. The M60's additional performance changes both energy use and purchase purpose, whereas the eDrive40 is the more efficiency-focused version within the first sedan line-up.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
The i5 combines executive-sedan seating and extensive digital equipment with the different routine of battery charging. Buyers drawn to the 5 Series name should evaluate luggage access, rear-seat needs, charging stops and cabin-control preference against the combustion G60 and other EV sedans. Options such as assistance systems and in-car entertainment may also vary by country and original subscription terms. Do not assume Chinese-market long-wheelbase i5 proportions describe the European G60.
What to inspect before buying used
A 2026 purchase inspection should document European trim, motor configuration, factory options, wheel dimensions and battery warranty provisions. Review maintenance and repair history, tyres, alignment, software functionality and the charging port. BMW's automated-driving feature descriptions contain regulatory and driver-supervision limits; nothing here implies unattended self-driving. A used vehicle's achievable range requires conditions and battery-state context beyond its launch WLTP specification.
Alternatives and the verdict
Choose the eDrive40 when executive comfort and efficiency are the priorities, the M60 only when its significantly greater performance is part of the reason to buy. Compare Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan for a dedicated EV layout and Volkswagen ID.7 for a less premium long-distance proposition. China-spec long-wheelbase and US MY2024 identities should have their own verified regional records, not be merged into this one.
