2023 BYD Dolphin — Hatchback Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 documented regional sale year; EU market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
The Dolphin's 2023 European introduction is more important to a used buyer than its shared name with an earlier Chinese-market car. BYD adapted the compact electric hatchback to European sales, with its e-Platform 3.0 and lithium-iron-phosphate Blade Battery. The result is a compact family EV worth considering against more established European hatchbacks, provided the advertised version can be tied to a specific battery and national specification.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
BYD's European launch described the 60.4-kWh battery version with a 427-km WLTP combined range. It also outlined planned smaller 44.9-kWh Active and Boost variants with different estimated WLTP distances. A plan to offer a later variant is not proof that an individual 2023-delivered car has it. The 427-km figure is an official laboratory-cycle value for a specified configuration, not a universal road-test result or a promise of 427 km at motorway speeds.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
The main attractions are efficient space use, a hatchback footprint and a price class intended to broaden battery-electric adoption. Like every EV, it asks the buyer to be precise about usable driving distance and charging access rather than depend on the headline range. Cabin ergonomics, driver-assistance behavior and infotainment menus should be explored in person; feature availability changes with grade and market, and a product press release cannot stand in for a 2026 independent assessment of a used example.
What to inspect before buying used
Obtain the delivery country, original trim, battery documentation and charging specifications before comparing listings. Try an AC charge and, where possible, a DC session under suitable conditions; inspect software state, charging connectors, crash repair records and remaining battery warranty terms. A later model-year equipment sheet is not evidence of what was installed on a car sold in late 2023. Imported cars may encounter different network, map and language support.
Alternatives and the verdict
The Dolphin works best for buyers wanting a useful European-market electric hatchback rather than a large SUV. Its natural rivals include the MG4 EV and Volkswagen ID.3, each with different drivetrain and packaging decisions. The longer-range 60.4-kWh European version should be assessed separately from the subsequently proposed lower-capacity grades and from China-market Dolphin variants.
