2023 Chevrolet Colorado — Pickup Buyer’s Guide
Evidence scope: formal manufacturer MY2023; US. Other markets and trim levels can differ.
Methods: Manufacturer-rated specifications and test-cycle estimates are labelled rather than presented as independently road-tested results. Verify the actual build, trim, equipment and sale-market documents of an individual car.
Why this 2023 version matters
Chevrolet reset its American midsize pickup for MY2023 instead of giving the outgoing Colorado a minor face-lift. The new body is configured around a crew cab and short bed, with an 11.3-inch infotainment display and a family of off-road-oriented grades. It deserves comparison with both the previous Colorado and its closely related GMC Canyon, without assuming the two brands package trims identically.
Verified 2023 powertrain and market specifications
Although every documented US 2023 Colorado uses the 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder family, there are three important tunes. The standard form makes 237 hp, Turbo Plus raises that to 310 hp, and High-Output keeps 310 hp but increases torque to 430 lb-ft. An eight-speed automatic is standard. Specifying simply “2.7 turbo” hides distinctions that affect towing, climbing with cargo and used market pricing.
Market-specific specification summary: US 2023: 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder in 237-hp/260-lb-ft, 310-hp/391-lb-ft Turbo Plus, and 310-hp/430-lb-ft High-Output tunes; eight-speed automatic.
2023 changes and generation boundary: All-new 2023 generation with WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, ZR2; crew cab short bed, 11.3-inch central display and new tailgate options.
Equipment, strengths and practical limitations
WT and LT target conventional utility, while Trail Boss and Z71 offer different equipment for off-pavement use. ZR2 has specific hardware and limits of its own. The headline maximum trailering capability of 7,700 pounds is achievable on qualifying versions, not every Colorado; official material gives a lower ZR2 limit. Bed-mounted electrical or storage options also depend on what was actually ordered.
What a 2026 used buyer should check
A second-hand truck inspection should examine bed sides, tailgate hardware, suspension components, tyres and any towing upgrades, then compare the fitted drivetrain and package with factory specifications. A large infotainment screen should be tested for normal operation, but it is not proof that every driver-assist function was purchased. Use VIN-specific documentation for any open official campaigns.
Alternatives and purchase decision
Choose the 2023 Colorado if new cabin technology and multiple turbo outputs appeal. A Nissan Frontier retains a V6 strategy; Toyota Tacoma MY2023 represents an older platform, while MY2024 Tacoma is a completely different comparison. Payload, physical size and actual equipment are more decisive than a badge or brochure-wide maximum.
