2023 Hyundai Exter — India Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 India retail year in India. These figures are not automatically transferable to other countries or trims.
What the 2023 vehicle actually was
India’s original 2023 Exter was designed around tight urban roads and a modest ownership budget, not around four-wheel-drive use. Its taller proportions and high roof aim to make a small footprint feel less cramped. What matters most in the original launch range is the combination of 1.2-litre petrol, automated-manual option and separate CNG versions.
The five-speed AMT is a practical traffic convenience but fundamentally different from a torque-converter automatic or CVT. Factory CNG models initially used a five-speed manual; later dual-cylinder CNG and 2026-version trim information should not be copied backward. The 2023 press coverage lists original EX, S and SX-family variants, with higher grades carrying more technology.

Strengths and ownership compromises
That gives commuters a fairly clear choice: conventional petrol manual for direct control, AMT for stop-start traffic or CNG for a fueling plan where the network is reliable. None is inherently the best deal without checking actual driving pattern, CNG inspection rules and the condition of an individual car.
Used buyer checks in 2026
Check a used AMT for abrupt shifts or delayed engagement, inspect the CNG system only with qualified personnel, and verify paperwork covering cylinder certification and permitted modifications. Higher-trim safety and camera equipment needs physical confirmation. Do not treat a manufacturer fuel-economy number as a promise for traffic in Mumbai or Delhi.
Alternatives and who should consider it
The Tata Punch and Citroën C3 approach entry-city SUV motoring differently. Test rear-seat room, luggage packaging and the chosen transmission before choosing based on roof height or infotainment count alone.
Factory specifications, test-cycle figures and original equipment are region- and grade-specific; verify the individual vehicle and official service eligibility using its VIN. This editorial is a buying framework, not a road test or an assertion of long-term failure rates.
