2023 Nissan Z — Coupe Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 model year; US market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
The 2023 US Nissan Z brought the Z sports-coupe name back with more power and a deliberately recognizable long-hood, short-deck shape. It is a buyer's car, not a general-purpose family model, so its value rests on engagement, specification and condition rather than broad cargo claims. Japan's Fairlady Z naming belongs to the same broad family but does not establish that Japanese equipment matches the US version.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
Nissan's original 2023 US sales release specifies a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 making 400 hp, paired with either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Launch grades were Sport, Performance and a limited Proto Spec. That is an important choice: the buyer interested in a manual should check actual transmission and option records rather than assume a performance-oriented advertisement implies three pedals.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
The Z's strengths are the dedicated two-door layout, strong six-cylinder output and choice of transmissions. Trade-offs follow from the brief: restricted rear accommodation, a lower seating position and tyres and consumables appropriate to a performance coupe. Equipment varies across the grades; the more expensive Performance version should not be described by a generic base-model spec sheet. Original Nissan MSRPs are historical launch context, not current used-car guidance.
What to inspect before buying used
In 2026, inspect mechanical service documentation, tyre and brake condition, modifications, accident history and any signs of track use. None of those possibilities implies the Z has a documented model-wide defect. Verify the VIN against open manufacturer campaigns, check that replacement parts suit the original US build, and examine the cabin interface and driving position on a real journey. Importers should confirm local registration and emissions compliance.
Alternatives and the verdict
Consider this Z if you want an unmistakably two-seat-style sports-coupe experience with six-cylinder character and manual availability. Toyota GR Supra and Ford Mustang are useful comparisons, albeit with distinct powertrain and cabin strategies. The 2023 Nissan Z is not the same vehicle as a preceding 370Z, and a nameplate-based parts listing alone is insufficient to establish compatibility.
