What changed or distinguishes 2023: Second-generation Spanish-market sales launch in June 2023; region-dependent power and drivetrain.
The powertrain and its rating context
The European 2023 Amarok is not a lightly updated version of Volkswagen's original pickup. Spain's Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles newsroom announced second-generation retail availability in June 2023, using a larger double-cab body and a substantial range of driver-assistance technology. Spanish launch specifications included a 2.0 TDI rated at 125 kW/170 CV, a 151-kW/215-CV 2.0 TDI and a 177-kW/241-CV 3.0 TDI V6. These are Spanish-market units and should not be pasted into South African, Australian or other Amarok advertisements without local validation.
Where this vehicle makes sense
The gearboxes matter for 2026 buyers. Volkswagen described a six-speed manual on its Spanish entry model, whereas Style and Aventura received a ten-speed automatic. All three cited versions were four-wheel drive. A potential buyer seeking an automatic V6 for towing therefore has a very different maintenance and fuel-cost picture from someone buying a basic work pickup. The model shares architecture with the latest-generation Ford Ranger but that does not establish interchangeability of components, software, trim or warranty.
Practical compromises for 2026 shoppers
This pickup makes sense for work sites, towing and leisure use where body-on-frame construction and a cargo bed are useful. Its size, diesel emissions controls, tyres and routine servicing may be an excessive compromise for purely urban family driving. Volkswagen's Spanish release quotes consumption of 8.6, 8.9 and 10.1 l/100 km respectively for the cited launch versions; the test standard and version should be checked before comparing directly with another jurisdiction's claims.
Used-car inspection priorities
Inspect a used Amarok for heavy towing evidence, trailer-electrics condition, structural underbody damage, water ingress after off-road use and complete diesel service documentation. Confirm actual cab style, 4×4 system and differential equipment from build records. Do not assume a car sold in June 2023 automatically has the same engine as a MY2023 truck marketed elsewhere. Follow local VIN recall checks and any gearbox or emissions-system service requirements from the official documentation.
Alternatives and model-year boundaries
Against a same-generation Ford Ranger, the decision is about exact engines, cabin equipment, dealer support and purchase condition rather than an invented assertion that one brand's hardware is universally more reliable. A Hilux or D-Max provides a separate regional alternative.
