VEHICLE OVERVIEWMotorRift

The US-market 2024 F-150 is a refreshed version of the current full-size pickup, not a wholly new frame and cabin generation. Its significance to a second-hand buyer is the breadth of trucks sold under one badge: an uncomplicated work specification and a highly equipped hybrid crew cab can differ more in usefulness than their exterior shape suggests. Buyers should identify cab, box length, axle, engine, final-drive ratio and equipment before comparing prices. Ford also changed lighting and tailgate arrangements in the refresh, but these do not erase fundamental payload limits.

Verified powertrains and equipment

Ford offered a 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6, 5.0-litre V8, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 and PowerBoost 3.5-litre full hybrid, depending on grade. Its 2024 US PowerBoost documentation quotes up to 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, with available integrated electrical power supply for tools and campsites. These are system figures, not separate electric-motor output, and not figures for every F-150. Pro Power Onboard ratings, towing hardware and bed arrangements are option dependent. A hybrid F-150 does not have to be plugged into a charger.

What to check before buying used

Check a used example at the job it will actually perform. Towing claims on advertisements are inadequate without the individual truck’s payload label, hitch specification and loaded trailer calculation; a luxury cab can have less carrying capacity than an austere work truck. Inspect bed damage, tow connectors, corrosion and signs of heavy accessory installation. Test electronic displays and the tailgate mechanism, and request maintenance and campaign history. On a hybrid, verify the traction system and auxiliary power functions with an appropriately trained technician rather than diagnosing high-voltage components yourself.

Best fit, compromises and competitors

The F-150 makes sense for regular towing, bed loads or on-site power needs, but is a large and inconvenient urban commuter. The 2.7-litre gas truck may be enough for buyers who rarely tow, while the V8, 3.5 EcoBoost and hybrid reward different priorities. Compare a 2024 Silverado 1500 or Ram 1500 using exact cab and load configuration. Its 2024 US ratings must not be transplanted onto Australian-market Rangers or Canadian towing notices; the pickup name and year alone are insufficient to determine the hardware.
