The Japanese Honda N-BOX is a tiny-footprint kei tall wagon with a surprisingly useful upright cabin, quite different from the Honda HR-V or global compact crossovers. Third-generation cars were already on sale before 2024, but Honda revised the N-BOX range in September 2024 as the outdoor-inspired JOY grade arrived. The JOY name does not make it a separately engineered platform; the relevant 2024 record therefore keeps N-BOX, CUSTOM and JOY as related grade variants rather than manufacturing thin separate models. Look closely at sliding-door functionality and seating configuration on a used example.

Verified powertrains and equipment

Honda’s Japanese 2024 announcement confirms 660 cc DOHC gasoline versions and turbocharged 660 cc versions in applicable CUSTOM and JOY grades, all with CVT and either front-wheel or four-wheel drive according to specification. The kei class has a distinctive regulatory framework, so a US EPA mileage figure or Western-market safety-star assumption does not belong here. For the September update, seat heating joined standard equipment on the basic N-BOX, while selected CUSTOM grades gained camera/equipment options. Detailed turbo output and local consumption should be taken from the precise model code rather than inferred from the segment.

What to check before buying used

Used examples should be inspected as daily mobility appliances. Cycle the sliding doors, fold and refit the seats, check step heights and test the rear ventilation and screen. Door tracks and interior panels are exposed to frequent use on family and commercial trips, so signs of wear can matter as much as odometer readings. Confirm whether the drivetrain is FF or 4WD and which safety-camera equipment was fitted at the factory. If the vehicle is being imported, verify kei-specific legal registration, crash compliance and parts support rather than assuming overseas transferability.

Best fit, compromises and competitors

An N-BOX is ideal for crowded streets and families needing maximum access in minimum road space, but its small engine and very short wheelbase have different long-distance characteristics from a larger MPV. Compare Suzuki Spacia or Daihatsu Tanto within the same Japanese category, and Honda Freed if regular highway travel with more passengers is expected. This is not a performance or towing purchase, nor a claim that every kei vehicle uses less fuel under every driving condition.
