The 2024 Hyundai Kona marks an actual generational change for the American small crossover rather than a cosmetic update. Its SX2 body is roomier-looking and differently styled from the earlier model; prospective buyers should take care when filtering second-hand listings whose photos may show the previous Kona. This article covers gasoline versions, not the separately engineered electric drive sold under the same name.

Powertrains and market-specific specifications

Hyundai's original US reveal specifies a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson four-cylinder at 147 hp and 132 lb-ft, paired with an intelligent variable transmission. The higher N Line and Limited gasoline models use a 1.6-litre turbo four producing 190 hp and 195 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic. That 2024 transmission should not be confused with gearboxes in an earlier Kona or in regional European hybrid specifications.

Equipment, usability and model-year changes

Front-wheel drive and available HTRAC AWD bring meaningful differences in winter traction equipment and underfloor packaging. Hyundai also identifies a multi-link rear layout on the AWD gasoline models, versus a torsion-beam arrangement on the FWD version. Examine the actual screen and convenience package: a photographed Limited's large display does not necessarily describe a more basic SE, even if the 2024 design language is shared.

Used-buyer inspection and ownership trade-offs

On a used Kona, test the precise engine/transmission combination from cold, confirm AWD engagement where applicable and inspect the wheel sizes and underbody. A compact city crossover can experience extensive parking wear, so examine bumper mounts, parking sensors and body gaps carefully. Obtain maintenance receipts and check open local manufacturer campaigns through the VIN instead of extrapolating defects from older Kona generations.

Which buyers should consider it?

The new Kona appeals to urban buyers who want a compact SUV with more current cabin technology and familiar gasoline refuelling. A Kia Seltos gives another choice of naturally aspirated or turbo petrol configurations; a Mazda CX-30 offers a different focus on driver controls. Hyundai's own Kona Electric may be worth considering where charging is dependable, but its battery range and performance numbers do not belong to this gasoline article.
