The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary
BMW’s F40 1 Series was already on sale in the UK by 2020 following its 2019 launch. That generation is a decisive departure from the older rear-wheel-drive 1 Series: the mainstream car adopted a front-wheel-drive-based platform and a more space-efficient cabin. The high-output M135i xDrive uses a different all-wheel-drive layout and deserves clear separation inside the regional specification.
Powertrains and documented specifications
BMW’s period British launch material shows a 118i three-cylinder petrol at 140 hp and 220 Nm, a 118d diesel at 150 hp and 350 Nm, and the M135i xDrive four-cylinder petrol at 306 hp and 450 Nm. Additional diesel options included 116d and 120d xDrive. Output is BMW’s stated hp figure; do not silently convert that into PS or compare it with a different market rating.
Changes and timing that matter
The switch in drivetrain architecture brought more everyday cabin space but removed part of the earlier generation’s rear-drive character. Buyers searching for a used 2020 example should identify F40 from the body, VIN and original registration, not assume the familiar 118i badge describes a mechanically identical car across generations.
Everyday usability and equipment
M Sport appearance, wheel dimensions, cabin screen sizes and assistance systems depend on the original package. Sportier models often run firmer tyres and suspension, which can have a disproportionate effect on comfort over poor roads. A short test drive on real local streets is more informative than listing photographs.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
In 2026 a thorough inspection should examine cooling-system behaviour, transmission responsiveness, electronic faults, steering alignment and wheel damage. Verify service records for the correct petrol or diesel engine, and inspect emissions-system warning history on high-mileage diesel cars. A used M135i’s extra output and AWD call for closer examination of tyres and all-wheel-drive operation.
Alternatives and who it suits
Audi A3 Sportback and Mercedes A-Class serve similar premium hatchback buyers; Volkswagen Golf offers a less premium-badged alternative. A 118i can suit daily use with reasonable restraint on running costs, whereas an M135i is a performance purchase. The original generation and engine are more important than the badge alone.
