The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary
Fiat’s Brazilian Cronos MY2020 was announced in August 2019 with a new HGT 1.8 automatic version, meaning “2020” here is a formal product line designation rather than proof of a calendar-2020 redesign. The Argentina-built compact sedan shares some engineering with the Argo hatchback but is a separately useful body-style research subject thanks to its cabin and 525-litre boot.
Powertrains and documented specifications
Fiat’s original line announcement specifies a 1.3-litre Firefly flex-fuel four-cylinder with up to 109 cv and 14.2 kgf·m on ethanol, paired with a five-speed manual in the entry version. A 1.8-litre E.torQ flex engine appeared in six-speed automatic versions. The 1.3 Drive GSR used a five-speed automated manual; it must not be described as the conventional six-speed automatic fitted to the 1.8.
Changes and timing that matter
The HGT grade introduced a sportier appearance and equipment presentation, not a wholly unrelated performance platform. Better-equipped Cronos versions included a touch display, parking sensors and comfort features, but option packs mattered. A second-hand buyer should verify airbags and electronic-stability equipment against the particular car and its original purchase documentation.
Everyday usability and equipment
For 2026 ownership, the Cronos works as a compact sedan for commuters needing more enclosed luggage capacity than a hatchback. Its long rear compartment helps with shopping and travel, although the physical opening and split-rear-seat availability deserve a practical test. Urban parking remains more manageable than with midsize sedans.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
Check whether a used example has the manual, GSR automated manual or regular automatic: these change how low-speed operation feels and the service evidence worth requesting. Examine cooling, suspension wear, transmission warning lights, tyres and signs of rear collision repair. Fuel-economy and power comparisons need to state ethanol or petrol, not silently switch fuels.
Alternatives and who it suits
For a Brazilian shortlist, Chevrolet Onix Plus, Volkswagen Virtus and Hyundai HB20S are natural sedan comparisons where period versions are available. Keep prices and versions dated; later Cronos MY editions can reorder equipment and powertrains. The strongest example is the one with documented service and the correct transmission for the driver’s use.
