The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary
The Alto 800 was sold in India with BS6 certification through 2020, even though its core nameplate and modest-city-car mission predate that year. Maruti’s first BS6 Alto arrived in April 2019, and the factory-engineered Alto S-CNG was announced in January 2020. This needs to remain distinct from the much later Alto K10 and from older BS4 examples still appearing in used listings.
Powertrains and documented specifications
The period car uses the compact 800 cc-class petrol powertrain, and factory CNG versions were offered in LXi and LXi(O) form. Maruti reported 31.59 km/kg for the BS6 CNG variant; that unit and regulatory context apply specifically to compressed natural gas in India. The petrol version must not inherit that number or be described as a factory CNG model without proof.
Changes and timing that matter
Alto’s minimal dimensions, simple equipment and easy parking are its purpose. That makes it a plausible first city car, but limited cabin width and engine performance matter on busy intercity highways or with several occupants. A shopper who often carries large loads should test rear-seat comfort and available luggage space rather than selecting by the brand’s sales reputation.
Everyday usability and equipment
Verify build date, BS6 emissions certification and exact variant on the registration documents. A dealer’s “2020 model” could describe either calendar-year manufacture or a generic listing label. SmartPlay entertainment was introduced on specific versions but was not a promise that every Alto had the same display, airbags and convenience fittings.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
For used cars, examine tyres, brakes, clutch, cabin water intrusion, underside repairs and evidence of overheating. A CNG example additionally requires a qualified inspection of pressure vessels and lines, with dates and local regulatory compliance checked. Confirm any recall by VIN; absence of a known issue list is not proof of reliability.
Alternatives and who it suits
WagonR provides more interior height and a more flexible range of engines; S-Presso has a different elevated driving position. Alto is for buyers whose dominant constraints are urban space and simple driving, provided the exact car’s service and safety equipment are properly checked.
