Confirmed as a 2020 U.S. production model
The Taycan 4S was announced in October 2019 and Porsche confirmed that 2020 model-year cars had reached U.S. dealers in April 2020. This makes it a valid 2020 American product, rather than a later model backdated from an early announcement. The 4S sits below the higher-output Taycan Turbo and Turbo S in the original U.S. lineup, with the same fundamental electric sports-sedan concept. Buyers must not assume that every car labeled Taycan has the same battery, acceleration potential or original equipment.
Two gross battery configurations, different outputs
Porsche listed a standard Performance Battery of 79.2 kWh gross and an optional 93.4-kWh gross Performance Battery Plus. With the smaller pack the 4S was quoted at up to 522 horsepower under overboost conditions, versus up to 563 horsepower with the larger pack. Those are manufacturer launch ratings under specified operating conditions, not continuous power measurements or evidence of a comparative track test. Battery gross capacity must not be represented as energy directly usable by the driver. Confirm battery designation through the vehicle’s production equipment records.
Why it is unlike an ordinary electric commuter
The Taycan was designed to give an electric sedan the chassis and control character of a Porsche sports car. The 4S accordingly makes sense to a buyer who values high performance, steering and premium cabin craftsmanship while still needing four-door access. It is much less suitable for someone choosing solely on purchase cost, cheapest tires or maximum battery range per dollar. Options and wheel dimensions can materially affect road comfort, replacement costs and even the practical benefit of a particular charging plan.
Daily ownership questions worth asking
Before purchasing a 2020 example in 2026, inspect battery state-of-health evidence, record any high-voltage system service and verify that both home and DC charging work on the actual vehicle. Porsche’s first model-year launch statements are not proof of any specific car’s present battery capacity. Check the cost of tires, brakes, insurance and dealer-level electronic diagnostics in your market. Imported vehicles may need additional scrutiny of infotainment compatibility and warranty arrangements. Those questions are more useful than treating a broad reputation for luxury as a durability guarantee.
Comparisons and boundaries
Compare it with a contemporaneous Tesla Model S, Audi e-tron GT only when matching actual sale year, or premium combustion sports sedans if charging is a major obstacle. The 2021 rear-wheel-drive Taycan should not be silently inserted into a 2020 4S record. Porsche’s own statements establish the battery and overboost figures given here but do not authorize invented EPA range, current residual values or independent braking results. Used examples should be considered in light of their particular specification, documented maintenance and local service ecosystem.
