The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary
Australia introduced the fourth-generation Jimny in January 2019, and its original three-door 4WD version remained on sale during 2020. A later Jimny Lite or five-door Jimny XL must not be portrayed as a 2020 Australian specification. This is the wide-body 1.5-litre JB74, distinct from Japan’s narrower 660 cc kei Jimny.
Powertrains and documented specifications
Its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 75 kW and 130 Nm. Buyers could choose a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, both connected to a selectable part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. The ladder frame and rigid axles are functional off-road engineering, not cosmetic SUV styling.
Changes and timing that matter
The Jimny’s short wheelbase and compact footprint make it easy to place on narrow tracks and awkward city streets, but the same proportions bring limited rear seating and luggage capacity. Small-engine acceleration, especially with passengers or heavy accessories, is unlike a mainstream turbocharged crossover. Travellers should check legal payload before adding steel bars, roof gear or oversized tyres.
Everyday usability and equipment
Because Jimny models invite modifications, an original example with documented service and sympathetic use can be easier to assess than a heavily altered one. Inspect steering behaviour, driveline operation in the appropriate surface conditions, differential and axle seals, suspension joints, frame corrosion and previous recovery damage. Verify that tyres and wheels remain road-legal.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
The 4WD transfer system is intended for low-grip use; a prospective owner should understand the manufacturer’s instructions before testing locked modes on dry pavement. Review recalls by VIN and confirm that brake and camera features installed on the car match its 2020-market equipment list, not a later brochure.
Alternatives and who it suits
Alternatives include the larger Suzuki Vitara for commuting and carrying luggage, or traditional off-roaders for substantial towing needs. The Jimny makes most sense for buyers who genuinely value manoeuvrability and low-range 4WD and accept the compromises of a small three-door vehicle.
