Market and date basis: EU: documented calendar-year 2020 availability, not an unverified formal MY2020 designation.
What the 2020 designation actually covers
Volkswagen launched the open-top T-Roc Cabriolet in spring 2020, creating a rare crossover-styled convertible. This is a distinct two-door body with fabric folding roof rather than a trim package for the five-door T-Roc SUV. That difference matters to the archive, to passenger access and especially to second-hand ownership. Volkswagen's 2019 reveal announced a spring 2020 launch; its dedicated March 2020 running-gear release documents the actual introductory engines.
Powertrains and specification boundaries
The 999-cc three-cylinder 1.0 TSI produced 85 kW/115 PS and 200 Nm in launch specification. A 1.5-litre TSI four-cylinder produced 110 kW/150 PS. Both drove the front wheels with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.5 could be specified with DSG. The 1.0's original NEDC consumption figures are older-cycle values and should not be marketed as WLTP or real-world efficiency. Unlike some regular T-Roc versions, this cabriolet did not offer all-wheel drive at launch.
Space, driving purpose and everyday compromises
The major trade-off is architectural. Removing the fixed roof makes open-air driving possible, but it changes rear-seat access, boot usability, body weight and everyday noise exposure. Assess the usable boot with the roof mechanism in its normal position; a claimed luggage volume cannot predict whether a specific suitcase will clear the opening. A buyer using child seats or needing easy passenger entry should trial those tasks before being won over by the distinctive styling.
A sensible second-hand inspection in 2026
Inspect roof operation several times, including seals, windows and locking points, with the car stationary in a safe location. Signs of dampness, water tracking or irregular movement justify closer specialist examination. Verify that any repairs preserve the specific convertible body parts rather than relying on ordinary T-Roc compatibility. The powertrain should receive its own separate test for DSG smoothness, servicing and petrol turbo operation. None of these checks amounts to an unsourced reliability ranking.
Alternatives and the buying decision
The T-Roc Cabriolet appeals to owners looking for a relatively compact open-top vehicle with a higher seating position, not those needing a versatile five-door SUV. Its obvious counterpoints are ordinary T-Roc, Mazda MX-5 and the MINI Convertible, each with very different passenger and practicality compromises. Choose on whether a fabric roof genuinely improves your use case rather than on the false premise that this model is simply a T-Roc with a cheaper roof.
