2021 CUPRA Formentor: first generation / MQB Evo — EU

Model-year identity and market scope

The 2021 CUPRA Formentor is a distinct CUPRA-branded crossover, rather than just a rebadged Leon estate. Its July 2021 manufacturer catalogue shows a unusually wide choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid systems. An owner looking at the attractive angular body needs to understand that the entry 1.5 TSI, the powerful 2.0 TSI 4Drive and an e-HYBRID can be very different vehicles to run. This article concentrates on the period European catalogue, where local-country availability still needs confirmation.

2021 powertrains and engineering

For the plug-in pair, CUPRA listed the 1.4 TSI-based e-HYBRID with either 150 kW/204 PS or 180 kW/245 PS of combined system power and a six-speed DSG. The catalogue states a 12.8-kWh battery without establishing how much is usable. Its WLTP electric-driving range was 53–59 km for the 204-PS variant and 52–55 km for the 245-PS variant, depending on specification. These are homologation ranges, not an unqualified real-world promise. Both cited hybrids are front-wheel drive; a 4Drive logo belongs to different engine configurations.

Verified period variants

  • e-HYBRID 204 (EU): 1.4 L TSI petrol PHEV; 150 kW /204 PS system; 6-speed DSG; FWD. 12.8 kWh stated battery; 53–59 km WLTP electric range per 2021 brochure; test: WLTP
  • e-HYBRID 245 (EU): 1.4 L TSI petrol PHEV; 180 kW /245 PS system; 6-speed DSG; FWD. 12.8 kWh stated battery; 52–55 km WLTP electric range; test: WLTP
  • 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI family (EU): 1.5 L or 2.0 L petrol depending market; 6MT or 7DSG depending engine; FWD or 4Drive depending version. Brochure indicates power outputs 150/190/245/310 PS; must check local offer

Equipment, competitors and practical differences

The same brochure documents a broad non-hybrid lineup that includes 150-PS 1.5 TSI and 310-PS 2.0 TSI performance versions. Buyers should not confuse the latter with a 245-PS plug-in just because both use sportier trim cues. Battery packaging reduces the plug-in model’s luggage space relative to some pure-petrol versions, while its electric running makes more sense when the owner can reliably charge. The touchscreen-oriented cockpit and optional driver aids need practical testing rather than blind acceptance of brochure promises.

Who should buy it, and who might prefer an alternative?

Against a Volkswagen Golf GTE, the Formentor provides a higher seating position and alternative styling but does not avoid the economics of plug-in use. Against a conventional crossover, its appeal is distinctive design and a more specialized performance range, potentially with a firmer ride. People who rarely charge should calculate petrol-running consumption separately from a low headline WLTP combined figure that assumes a charged battery.

What a 2026 used buyer should verify

Inspect the original VIN specification, DSG shifts, traction-system warnings, charging-port operation and state-of-health diagnostics when applicable. Verify wheel size and brake fitment against the original catalogue because options change tire and service costs. Country-level CO2 taxes and charging connectors should be checked locally, never inferred from a generic global equipment photograph.
