2021 Fiat 500e: 3rd generation electric
The 2021 New Fiat 500 electric hatchback looks nostalgic, but it is not an electrified trim of the older petrol Fiat 500. It is a different third-generation EV. For a second-hand buyer, that generational distinction matters more than the shared round headlights: battery choices, charging equipment and cabin technology define the ownership experience.
Which 2021 vehicle is this?
Fiat introduced the redesigned all-electric New 500 in 2020 and marketed its hatchback in European markets into 2021. The high-capacity launch configuration featured a 42-kWh battery and CCS fast charging, but the later entry-range choice offered a different travel envelope. The traditional combustion-powered 500 remained in the wider market as a separate line.
This profile applies to documented European markets and identifies a vehicle offered during calendar 2021. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.
Documented 2021 powertrain and specifications
EU — New 500 Action/Passion/Icon hatchback family, battery-dependent. Manufacturer data are reproduced with their original units and testing context; no independent road-test results are claimed.
Powertrain: Battery-electric single front motor; launch 42 kWh version (87 kW), separate shorter-range versions
Transmission: Single-speed reduction gear
Driven wheels: FWD
Launch high-capacity battery: 42 kWh manufacturer stated; do not confuse gross with later usable estimates
DC charging (42 kWh launch): Up to 85 kW CCS Combo 2
Body generation: All-new third-generation battery-electric 500, distinct from combustion 500
Efficiency/range protocol: WLTP, battery and equipment-specific, up to 320 km for 42 kWh launch configuration
What matters in everyday ownership
A compact turning circle, easy parking and strong visual identity make the electric 500 attractive for dense streets. Owners who primarily travel locally may rarely need rapid charging; others must calculate how frequently longer motorway journeys will stretch a small car’s battery and compact cabin. The 320-km WLTP figure belongs to a specific original configuration, not every New 500.
Used-buying checks in 2026
Verify the actual battery option from the VIN/build record and check the on-board charger and charge-port specification. Ask for battery diagnostics and a practical AC/DC charging demonstration at compatible equipment. Cabins and doors are compact, so inspect access for rear passengers and child seats before assuming the charm solves everyday ergonomic needs. Check software, charging history and any outstanding VIN-specific actions.
Alternatives and limits
The MINI Cooper SE has a different premium-small-EV interpretation, while Renault Zoe offers a different footprint and electrical system. Fiat’s own New 500 Cabrio changes usability and body construction, not simply upholstery. Buyers requiring a consistently large boot or five-person accommodation should examine a larger EV instead of stretching the Fiat beyond its intended job.
