2021 Geely Emgrand — CN sale year
Launched in China on 28 August 2021, the fourth-generation Geely Emgrand marks a clean platform change to the company’s BMA small-car architecture. It remains an affordable conventional compact sedan rather than an electric or high-performance product. The distinction matters when navigating global search results: later export badges and updates should not be used to fill gaps in the original Chinese market configuration.
Model identity and documented powertrains
Geely documents a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder making 84 kW and 147 Nm, combined with either a five-speed manual or CVT. The 2021 car measures 4,638 mm long, 1,820 mm wide and 1,460 mm high. These are domestic launch data, not evidence that every overseas Emgrand sold subsequently had identical calibration, screen specification or safety aids. The press release’s drag-coefficient claim is manufacturer data, not an independent aerodynamic test.
- 1.5 petrol manual: 1.5 L naturally aspirated I4, 84 kW, 147 Nm; 5-speed manual; FWD
- 1.5 petrol CVT: 1.5 L naturally aspirated I4, 84 kW, 147 Nm; CVT; FWD
Where the 2021 version makes sense
The model has a conventional drivetrain, usable sedan body and packaging advantages from the wider new platform. Geely highlighted digital instrumentation, a floating infotainment screen and available surround-view cameras, but the options depended on trim. For urban family use, the choice between a manual and a CVT is more central than the fact that the car carried a modern multimedia screen. A prospective owner should evaluate rear-seat ergonomics and actual boot opening, not just quoted volume.
Limitations and market distinctions
Neither the 84-kW engine nor CVT should be confused with a later turbocharged or hybrid powertrain in an adjacent market. Buyers seeking rapid overtaking performance should test the car loaded with passengers and air conditioning. A camera or recording feature noted in a manufacturer launch story might only be present on higher grades. The original Chinese infotainment ecosystem may have limited functionality if the vehicle is taken outside its home market.
Buying used in 2026
Record the exact build month, domestic trim name and gearbox from the registration and factory labels. Inspect CVT behaviour and fluid-maintenance evidence where relevant, plus signs of crash repair and screen hardware failures. Consider a Toyota Corolla or other compact local-market sedan if its dealer network better suits long-term needs. The relevant question is not whether every Emgrand is mechanically identical, but whether a particular 2021 BMA car has support and parts availability where it will actually be used.
