2021 Honda CR-V: fifth generation / RW — US

Model-year identity and market scope

In America, the 2021 Honda CR-V is the later stage of the fifth-generation compact SUV rather than the newer redesign introduced in a subsequent model year. Honda’s 2021 equipment matrix divides the range into a 1.5-litre turbo gasoline version and the 2.0-litre two-motor hybrid. The difference affects transmission, AWD availability, spare-tire packaging and fuel consumption more than a superficial trim badge.

2021 powertrains and engineering

The conventional 1.5-litre turbo engine makes 190 SAE horsepower and 179 lb-ft, mated to a CVT with front- or all-wheel drive depending on grade. The 2021 US hybrid has a 2.0-litre petrol engine but is rated at 212 total system horsepower, with electric power and an electronic CVT-style hybrid drive. Honda listed the 2021 hybrid at 40 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined on the American EPA cycle. It is not a charging-socket PHEV.

Verified period variants

  • Gasoline LX/Special Edition/EX/EX-L/Touring (US): 1.5 L turbo I4; 190 SAE hp /179 lb-ft; CVT; FWD or AWD grade-dependent. 2021US nonhybrid line
  • CR-V Hybrid EX/EX-L/Touring (US): 2.0 L Atkinson I4 + electric traction, 212 hp total; hybrid eCVT; AWD. 2021US hybrid only AWD; 40/35/38 city/hwy/combined EPA; test: EPA

Equipment, competitors and practical differences

The Hybrid EX, EX-L and Touring grades use AWD in Honda’s American chart, while gasoline CR-V grades permit a separate drive choice. Hybrid hardware also affects some luggage and underfloor arrangements, so compare physical storage needs. The 2021 Special Edition gasoline trim added another equipment option without becoming a third separate powertrain. Engine power should never be inferred from EX-L trim names on overseas market registrations.

Who should buy it, and who might prefer an alternative?

For a mixed city/suburban family, the hybrid may reward repeated stop-start driving. For a budget-minded shopper, a gasoline front-drive trim could avoid equipment expense and provide an adequate amount of crossover space. Against a RAV4 Hybrid, examine rear-seat layout, tire sizes and actual maintenance documentation rather than accepting brand-based reliability assumptions. In the UK or Japan, CR-V powertrain nomenclature and period availability require separate local verification.

What a 2026 used buyer should verify

Inspection should include the CVT or hybrid drive in varied speed conditions, real AWD behavior where safe to test, cabin moisture signs, climate control and every camera/radar warning. Confirm the actual 2021 EPA variant before citing an economy figure, and run a VIN-specific recall lookup rather than declaring any used sample defect-free.
