2021 Kia K5: 1st generation DL3
Replacing the Optima name in the United States made the 2021 K5 more than a badge exercise. It brought a wider, lower-looking sedan with an all-turbo powertrain range, yet the athletic appearance can mislead shoppers: a GT-Line and a genuine GT do not use the same engine or gearbox.
Which 2021 vehicle is this?
This is the first US-market K5 using Kia’s N3 platform, known internally by the DL3 generation code. The K5 naming also exists in Korea, where the model and engine menu must be checked independently. For American 2021 cars, the major split is the mainstream 1.6-liter turbo with an eight-speed automatic versus the high-output GT 2.5-liter with a wet dual-clutch.
This profile applies to the United States and identifies a formal 2021 model year. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.

Model-year distinction: New K5 nameplate replaces US Optima; this is not a 2021 US Optima
What matters in everyday ownership
The standard turbo models suit buyers who want a family-size sedan and restrained daily power delivery without adopting a crossover. Available all-wheel drive on selected 1.6T grades changes the car’s all-season appeal. The GT is a much more performance-led choice, but its drivetrain is not simply a higher equipment grade of the same engine.
Used-buying checks in 2026
Check whether a used K5 is an LXS, GT-Line, EX or GT, and match the VIN to engine and transmission before relying on performance claims. Verify whether AWD was optioned and that wheel/tire fitment matches the actual variant. Assess the service record, infotainment functions and evidence of collision repairs; any safety campaign needs VIN-based eligibility checks.
Alternatives and limits
A 2021 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry offer other mature sedan philosophies. The Hyundai Sonata is a particularly relevant platform-era cross-shop. Buyers drawn to the GT name but content with moderate acceleration can select a 1.6T trim, while those needing a wagon or SUV cargo aperture should not mistake the low-roof sedan silhouette for equivalent practicality.
