2021 Lexus NX — JP calendar year
2021 identity and market
The second-generation Lexus NX entered the Japanese market in October 2021 and introduced a much more meaningful powertrain choice than a typical cosmetic facelift. Lexus used the model to introduce its first plug-in hybrid alongside a regular hybrid and petrol derivatives, giving customers different ownership demands under one familiar SUV name.
Verified powertrains and equipment
The Japanese 2021 launch document identifies four major powertrain families: a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 2.4-litre turbo petrol, a 2.5-litre full hybrid and a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid. Driveline configurations differ: the turbo and plug-in were specified with AWD; naturally aspirated and regular hybrid variants include front-driven alternatives. Engine outputs, battery usable capacity and electric-only range need grade-specific market documents before populating further numerical fields.
Documented market-specific variants
- NX 250 Japan: 2.5L naturally aspirated petrol; automatic, grade-specific confirmation needed; FF or AWD
- NX 350 Japan: 2.4L turbo petrol; automatic; AWD
- NX 350h Japan: 2.5L full hybrid; hybrid transaxle; FF or AWD
- NX 450h+ Japan: 2.5L plug-in hybrid; hybrid transaxle; AWD
Everyday strengths and limits
The NX appeals to buyers who want a premium two-row crossover but the choice between simple refuelling and routine charging. A plug-in version can make sense if charging is frequent, while the self-charging hybrid removes the need to install a home charger. The turbo places a different emphasis on performance and does not share the hybrid’s service architecture.
2026 used-owner checks
In a used example, confirm which engine is present from the VIN and build record, verify software and driver-assist functions, and inspect the high-voltage system only through qualified personnel where applicable. A missing charging cable or unsupported imported connector can materially change a plug-in car’s usefulness. Avoid reading European WLTP or US EPA figures directly into the original Japanese vehicle.
Alternatives and buying decision
The BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC offer alternatives with their own regional engine calendars, while the Toyota RAV4 can provide comparable everyday utility with less premium cabin emphasis. A 2021 NX must be distinguished from the older first-generation NX still present in other markets.
Regional and year boundaries
