2021 NIO ES6: 1st generation
The 2021 NIO ES6 is a five-seat luxury electric SUV whose motor and battery combinations are much more varied than a simple “long range” badge suggests. One car can use a pair of 160-kW motors, while another carries a more powerful rear motor. The original 70/84-kWh offerings and later available 100-kWh battery-swapping programs mean two similar-looking cars can have very different ownership economics.
Which 2021 vehicle is this?
ES6 deliveries began in 2019, and NIO’s official April 2021 report records 3,163 ES6 deliveries in that month. This is the first-generation vehicle still being sold in 2021; it is not the new ES6 announced in 2023. Original factory specification documents distinguish Standard and Performance electric motor layouts and earlier battery capacities, with subsequent upgrade options handled separately.
This profile applies to China and identifies a vehicle offered during calendar 2021. Registrations, facelifts and equipment in other jurisdictions are not interchangeable. A specification mentioned below applies only to the named version; optional equipment and later software or homologation changes need separate documentation.
Documented 2021 powertrain and specifications
CN — China 2021 ES6 Standard versus Performance, battery subscription/purchase. Manufacturer data are reproduced with their original units and testing context; no independent road-test results are claimed.
Powertrain: ES6 Standard 160 kW front + 160 kW rear or Performance 160 kW front + 240 kW rear motor
Transmission: Dual-motor electric reductions
Driven wheels: AWD
Original Standard motor pairing: 160 kW + 160 kW
Original Performance motor pairing: 160 kW + 240 kW
2018 launch battery options: 70 kWh or 84 kWh; 100 kWh upgrade announced Nov 2020
2021 sales proof: 3,163 ES6 deliveries in April 2021
Efficiency/range protocol: Original China NEDC; 2021 pack-swapping options must not be confused with later CLTC
What matters in everyday ownership
For daily family travel the ES6 combines conventional SUV cargo utility with brisk two-motor electric performance. NIO’s battery swapping and subscription ecosystem can ease some recharging scenarios where stations exist. It also introduces contract complexity compared with an EV whose battery is always permanently owned. The EV’s curb mass and large tires should be considered when assessing tire wear and suspension condition.
Used-buying checks in 2026
Require documents identifying Standard or Performance hardware and current battery capacity. Crucially, establish whether the traction battery is included in the sale or remains bound to a BaaS subscription. Ask NIO whether account, warranty and battery-swap privileges can transfer. Inspect the car with EV-qualified equipment and confirm local charging connectivity before assuming Chinese domestic specifications work elsewhere.
Alternatives and limits
NIO EC6 uses a sportier roof and differs in luggage usability, while ES8 adds a larger three-row body. XPeng G3 and Tesla Model Y are different cost and packaging alternatives. Chinese NEDC distances from early NIO material cannot be substituted for later CLTC, American EPA or European WLTP values in a direct comparison.
