2021 Nissan Magnite — first-generation (IN)
Nissan’s first-generation Magnite became a meaningful small-SUV choice for Indian buyers after its December 2020 domestic launch. It was therefore commercially present in calendar 2021 despite some earlier corporate release material anticipating the new year as its start. This article covers the original India-built, sub-four-metre model, not the substantially updated Magnite presented in 2024. The short body and high seating position aim at crowded urban streets rather than long-distance luxury.
Verified 2021 identity and market specifications
Nissan’s period India technical brief documents two 999 cc petrol engines: the B4D naturally aspirated unit rated at 72 PS and the HRA0 turbo rated at 100 PS. The naturally aspirated model uses a five-speed manual, while the turbo offered a five-speed manual or X-TRONIC CVT. Nissan lists 160 Nm for the manual turbo and 152 Nm for the CVT under their respective operating bands. Those figures are Indian launch specifications, not promises about all later export countries or emissions calibrations.
- IN — B4D naturally aspirated launch: 1.0 L 3-cylinder petrol; 72 PS; transmission: 5-speed manual; drivetrain: FWD; Engine Displacement Cc: 999
- IN — HRA0 turbo manual: 1.0 L turbo petrol; 100 PS, 160 Nm; transmission: 5-speed manual; drivetrain: FWD; Engine Displacement Cc: 999
- IN — HRA0 turbo CVT: 1.0 L turbo petrol; 100 PS, 152 Nm; transmission: X-TRONIC CVT; drivetrain: FWD; Engine Displacement Cc: 999
Who it suits and trade-offs
An owner driving mostly short city journeys might find the naturally aspirated manual adequate, but the turbo can be more appealing with passengers and air-conditioning load. A Renault Kiger is a closely related India-market competitor, while Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet offer their own engine and packaging compromises. The Magnite does not become a larger family SUV just because it wears SUV styling; inspect actual seating comfort and luggage needs.
2026 used-buyer inspection priorities
For a used 2021 Magnite verify whether it is the NA/manual, turbo/manual or turbo/CVT, because the transmission drives much of the ownership choice. Test low-speed CVT response, examine records for filters and scheduled maintenance, check wheel and suspension damage on poor roads and assess parking-camera hardware where fitted. The availability of connected services and dealer support outside India must be verified independently for imports.
Alternatives and model-year boundaries
This is a period-correct early model suitable for buyers prioritizing manageable size and engine choice. It should be compared by its exact 2021 powertrain rather than using later safety equipment, pricing, 2024 facelift claims or an unverified generalized reliability verdict.
