2021 Ram 1500 — US model year
For 2021 the Ram 1500 DT offers a pickup alternative built around a coil-sprung rear axle and unusually broad cab and engine choices. It is not interchangeable with the still-sold Ram 1500 Classic, which belongs to the older generation. The buyer’s first task is to establish whether an advertisement refers to DT, Classic or the specialist TRX before comparing engines and accessories.
Model identity and documented powertrains
The original factory 2021 specifications identify a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 48-volt eTorque at 305 hp, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 at 260 hp and 480 lb-ft, and the 5.7-liter HEMI at 395 hp, whether or not its eTorque starter-generator is installed. All listed mainstream engines pair with an eight-speed automatic; 4×4 transfer case type and axle ratio differ. eTorque is a mild-hybrid support system, not a plug-in hybrid powertrain or battery-electric driving mode.
- Pentastar V6 eTorque: 3.6 L V6 mild hybrid, 305 hp, 269 lb-ft; TorqueFlite 850RE 8-speed automatic; 4×2 or 4×4; electrical_system: 48V belt starter generator
- EcoDiesel V6: 3.0 L turbo-diesel V6, 260 hp, 480 lb-ft; TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic; 4×2 or 4×4
- HEMI V8 / eTorque optional: 5.7 L V8, 395 hp, 410 lb-ft; TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic; 4×2 or 4×4
Where the 2021 version makes sense
Ram’s coil-sprung rear arrangement and available air suspension offer a different everyday comfort strategy from some leaf-sprung rivals, although final ride quality still depends on tires, payload and suspension condition. Buyers choosing between Quad Cab and Crew Cab need to prioritise passenger space versus bed configuration. The EcoDiesel’s low-speed torque may be valuable for particular duties; its emissions equipment and fuel requirements also demand the correct maintenance history.
Limitations and market distinctions
The existence of several V8 and mild-hybrid combinations makes a photograph of the engine bay insufficient proof of a powertrain. Battery condition, eTorque charging hardware and conventional 12-volt components must be assessed separately. The largest wheel or most luxurious trim is not necessarily the most suitable choice for towing, and a quoted model-family towing ceiling is never the rating of every truck.
Buying used in 2026
Have a qualified specialist examine suspension bushes or air suspension where fitted, driveline fluid history, tow hitch condition and signs of bed overloading. For the diesel, check the applicable servicing and emissions-system records without assuming that any owner complaint establishes population-wide failure rates. Obtain a configuration-specific towing table and the actual vehicle label before committing to a trailer. Cross-shop Sierra and Silverado for equipment and load needs rather than published headline figures.
