2021 Škoda Kushaq — MQB-A0-IN first generation (IN)
The Kushaq joined Škoda’s Indian range during 2021 as a locally oriented crossover with Volkswagen Group MQB-A0-IN underpinnings. It should not be confused with the European Kamiq or a later facelift even where the badge and basic engines appear familiar. The 2021 technical decision is chiefly between two turbocharged petrol engines and the gearbox pairings actually offered at launch.
Verified 2021 identity and market specifications
Škoda’s June 2021 press-kit record gives the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder as 85 kW/115 PS with 178 Nm, using a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic. The 1.5 TSI four-cylinder makes 110 kW/150 PS and 250 Nm, pairing with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG. Front-wheel drive applies to the documented Indian models. This is not evidence that every later trim had both transmissions, nor does it justify copying European emissions figures to Indian BS6 cars.
- IN — 1.0 TSI launch: 1.0 L I3 turbo petrol; 85 kW (115 PS), 178 Nm; transmission: 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic; drivetrain: FWD; Emissions: India BS6
- IN — 1.5 TSI EVO launch: 1.5 L I4 turbo petrol; 110 kW (150 PS), 250 Nm; transmission: 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG; drivetrain: FWD; Technology: active cylinder technology
Who it suits and trade-offs
The 1.0 automatic is a logical urban choice where stop-go traffic matters, whereas the 1.5’s additional output rewards drivers covering faster roads with passengers and luggage. Some shoppers may prefer a Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos for different cabin, service-network or engine offerings. The Kushaq’s appeal is the specific turbo-petrol driving character rather than a fabricated reliability ranking or blanket safety claim for every build.
2026 used-buyer inspection priorities
On a used example, match the engine and gearbox against registration papers and the factory build sheet. A DSG should be evaluated for correct low-speed behaviour, while any manual needs normal clutch inspection. Review service invoices, tire condition, coolant history and electronic equipment operation. India’s emissions and fuel-quality context should be respected if exporting the vehicle; do not substitute a later 2026 automatic gearbox introduced in a facelift.
Alternatives and model-year boundaries
For a 2026 buyer the Kushaq provides an unusually clear engine/gearbox choice in this segment, but the differences are operationally significant. This article is restricted to the launch-year Indian setup, not the later updated Kushaq specification or other markets with different regulatory approvals.
