2021 Subaru Outback — US model year
2021 identity and market
US-model-year 2021 Outback kept the sixth-generation tall-wagon formula introduced for MY2020. It is categorically distinct from the Australian 2021 sale-year Outback article elsewhere in this archive: the Australian source identifies a 2.5-litre range whereas the US market also offered a 2.4-litre XT turbo. Completing this earlier US review key prevents conflating those showroom specifications.
Verified powertrains and equipment
US buyers could choose the 182-hp 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder or XT grades with the 260-hp 2.4-litre turbo. Both drove all four wheels through variant-specific Lineartronic CVTs; Subaru specified a high-torque CVT for XT versions. Official US figures give up to 2,700 lb towing with the 2.5 and 3,500 lb with XT, subject to equipment and loading limitations. These are not Australian homologation figures.
Documented market-specific variants
- 2.5 petrol: 2.5L BOXER 182 hp, 176 lb-ft; Lineartronic CVT; Symmetrical AWD; max tow lb: 2700, EPA city highway combined mpg: 26/33/29; test-method note: EPA
- XT turbo: 2.4L turbo BOXER 260 hp, 277 lb-ft; high-torque Lineartronic CVT; Symmetrical AWD; max tow lb: 3500, EPA city highway combined mpg: 23/30/26; test-method note: EPA
Everyday strengths and limits
The Outback targets owners who want easy-loading wagon proportions and good visibility without moving into a taller three-row SUV. The XT makes a material difference to acceleration and load climbing, but it also carries a higher US EPA fuel-use figure. The 2021 updates included wider headlight and rear-seat reminder availability, not an all-new generation.
2026 used-owner checks
A used example deserves inspection of underbody damage, roof and cargo trim from outdoor use, correct AWD tire matching and all four brakes. Check the history of software updates and infotainment operation before assuming any head-unit complaint is a general defect. The XT adds turbocharger-related service considerations; only model-specific manufacturer bulletins can establish an actual fault.
Alternatives and buying decision
The Forester is shorter and taller; the Outback is longer and wagon-like. Compare the 2.5 with XT on the same journey if highway passing or hills matter. Towing decisions must use the exact US vehicle placard, trailer brakes and owner’s manual rather than merely copying a brochure maximum.
Regional and year boundaries
This US-only article preserves the already existing AU Outback article. It makes no claim that Australian 2021 vehicles received XT hardware.
