2021 Tata Safari: second generation / OMEGARC — IN

Model-year identity and market scope

Tata revived the Safari name in India for a substantially different SUV in early 2021. This is the OMEGARC-based three-row model announced in January, with bookings opening in February and deliveries scheduled from 22 February 2021. It is not the original body-on-frame Safari 4×4 from earlier decades. That single naming collision makes lineage a more important database field than the large SAFARI tailgate badge.

2021 powertrains and engineering

The 2021 launch specified a 2.0-litre Kryotec turbo-diesel producing 170 PS and 350 Nm. Tata paired it with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions, and offered six- and seven-seat cabin arrangements. The engineering derived from the OMEGARC family and shared vehicle concepts with Harrier, but the three-row shape and buyer intent justified a separate article. The cited early 2021 car is front-wheel driven; it should not inherit historic Safari 4×4 terminology or later facelift specifications.

Verified period variants

Equipment, competitors and practical differences

Tata’s 2021 grade presentation ranged from the simpler XE, through XM and XT, to XZ with added technology. Depending on grade, announced equipment included an 8.8-inch infotainment screen, JBL audio, panoramic roof, electrical parking brake and terrain-oriented drive-mode interfaces. A seller might describe all of those features together, but they were not fitted universally. The most important family question is whether third-row occupants have acceptable room and ventilation when the luggage compartment is loaded.

Who should buy it, and who might prefer an alternative?

The Safari appeals to Indian buyers who need a substantial family cabin without changing to a commercial vehicle. Versus a five-seat Harrier, it offers extra people-carrying flexibility with packaging compromises. Drivers who mainly travel alone within congested cities may find a smaller petrol SUV easier and less expensive to use; buyers planning longer trips should test the diesel’s drivability, shifting and the rear seats on actual roads.

What a 2026 used buyer should verify

Inspect the VIN-specific original grade, diesel aftertreatment where applicable, service and gearbox records, infotainment and the whole three-row interior. Avoid claiming that this particular 2021 car automatically has crash-test results or electronic features published for a later facelift. Regulatory emissions and parts details must be matched to the 2021 India build.
